Discussion and programmes for the extension of European capabilities in the areas of the basic sensing process ; the properties of materials ; the MSS instrument ; data processing ; earth science application ; ground truth and education are presented. Consideration is given to both aircraft ans satellite carried sensors. The final section identifies the specific programmes with some indication of what their content might be and ends with tables of associated cost and programme timing estimates. In the first section, it discusses the sources of radiant energy, the effects of the atmosphere and the radiation/matter interactions which give rise to useful information. The second section considers the sensing platform, scanning techniques, wavelength selection methods and detectors. The section ends with a serie of descriptions of MSS instruments available at the time of writing. Ce rapport traite des principes physiques fondamentaux dont relève la détection multispectrale appliquée à l'écographie et examine les méthodes de mesure aboutissant au recueil d'informations utiles. En première partie, les sources d'énergie rayonnante, les influences atmosphériques ainsi que l'action réciproque du rayonnement sur la matière sont passées en revue pour les données précieuses qu'elles représentent. En seconde partie, on considère la plate-forme d'observation, les techniques de balayage, les méthodes d'affichage des longueurs d'onde d'intérêt et les détecteurs utilisés avant de conclure par la description d'une série d'instruments à balayage multispectral disponibles à cette heure.
