This concept is founded on three steps of analysis which have to be performed in a strictly defined order. In the first step (alongtrack-step) all long-wave deviations with respect to a chosen zero-epoch are determined. As discussed, these deviations can represent only non-gravitational orbit errors (with exception of errors due to a deepresonnance-effect). Relative oceanographic phenomena are at this moment already surveyable. In the second step (timeseries-step) the separation of residual-tides from large-scale ocean-variations is realized. After this step the determinaton of all time variant model-errors (category V) is completed. In the third step (crossover-step) the crossover-differences are analysed. This results in the absolute sea-surface-topography of the zero-epoch and in the time-invariant model-errors (category C). The latter are caused by errors in the graviational field model and by a time tag bias. As shown, the permanent model-errors P (especially geoid-errors and the residual-tide S2) remain in the estimation of the absolute sea-surface-topography. For all steps of analysis several variants are tested and compared. The quality is always raised in the best way with the methods of spectral-analysis. It is shown, that the consistency of the analysed ERS-1-data (43/3-orbits) can be increased by 66%. Compared to a conventional crossover-analysis the alongtrack/crossover-method demonstrates its superiority. Additional refinements of this concept could be possible by analysing the double-differences, which show advantages due to their deduced filter-properties.
