In the first chapter the two problems are formulated, linearized, and transformed in singular integral equations. The symbol of the singular integral equation resulting from the simple N P is computed with the aid of surface polar coordinates and the validity of the Fredholm alternative and strong ellipticity of this equation are shown. The second chapter treats in detail the numerical implementation of the BEM for the simple N P. The respective steps are as follows: -1) Elementation of the sphere in nearly equal area blocks ; -2) Discretization of the integral equation with a finite-e1ement collocation method using piecewise constant trial functions ; -3) Representation of the topographic heights and their first partial derivatives by using spherical spline functions ; -4) Construction of efficient numerical quadrature formulas for the solution of weakly singular and singular integrals. In the third chapter the BEM is numerically tested in model computations, the results of which are promising. In particular the numerical convergence is found to be proportional to the characteristic parameter h of the elementation. Finally two geodetic applications are discussed and possible modifications and improvements are mentioned.
