The data acquisition comprises data generation, data transmission and data preprocessing. We point out some methods of analogue and digital data transmission and refer to the existing literature on data generation. Errors due to damping and distortion effects of the transmission line are discussed. The data path leads to the central unit of the data acquisition. Here, the data will be preprocessed for subsequent on-line pro--cessing. A survey on available non-intelligent and intelligent hardware facilities for the data pre-procession is given. The section data processing covers the presentation of basic mathematical models of the processes observed as well as their identification. The manifold of models is restricted to those being linear, time-invariant and independent from location. The remaining subclass consists of non-parametric and parametric models in the time and frequency domain with continuous and sampled input-output data. We present the most important and versatile models with the appro-priate identification methods (or parameter estimation methods for parametric models). The models serve for the prediction of the dynamic behavior of the observed processes, for the adjustment of noise-infested signals, for data smoothing, or for the estimation of unknown quantities. Finally the study deals with the applications of the presented hard- and software equipment for data acquisition and data pro-cessing in the fields of automatisation and control in civil engineering and hydrography and deformation analysis.
