The system provides a complete response to the regulations required (municipalities must develop an acoustic improvement plan and control of incompatibility between noise emission and human activity). The prototype information system will help the development of improvement plans for noise pollution, providing functionalities for mapping and for the detailed study of urban noise pollution. Data from the city of Ancona was used to develop the prototype system. The mathematical model used was " Gluck-Santoboni " (Istituto di Acustica " O.M. CORBINO " C.R.N.). The results obtained revealed numerous examples of incompatibility. Simulation of the outcome of various types of improvement measures showed the feasibility of obtaining the conditions required by the regulations in the DPCM of 1 March 1991. Future research is aimed at introducing a better mathematical model (with more parameters) and a set of guidelines for the type of improvement measures to be adopted in particular situations.
