We discuss general frameworks in which models of spatial movement may be developed. In particular, the article considers the object–field and Lagrangian–Eulerian dichotomies, and the SNAP/SPAN ontologies of the dynamic world, and classifies the variety of informatic structures according to these frameworks. A major challenge is transitioning between paradigms. Usually data is captured with respect to one paradigm but can usefully be represented in another. We discuss this process in formal terms and then describe experiments that we performed to show feasibility. It emerges that observational granularity plays a crucial role in these transitions. [Termes IGN] positionnement en intérieurRésumé : (auteur) This article proposes a comprehensive approach to computing a navigation graph for an indoor space. It focuses on a single floor, but the work is easily extensible to multi-level spaces. The approach proceeds by using a formal model, based on the combinatorial map but enhanced with geometric and semantic information. The process is almost fully automatic, taking as input the building plans providing the geometric structure of the floors and semantics of the building, such as functions of interior spaces, portals, etc. One of the novel aspects in this work was the use of combinatorial maps and their duals to provide a compact formal description of the topology and connectivity of the indoor structure represented by a connected, embedded graph. While making use of existing libraries for the more routine computational geometry involved, the research develops several new algorithms, including one for computing the local kernel of a region. The process is evaluated by means of a case study using part of a university building. [Termes IGN] traitement de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The research reported in this paper uses wireless sensor networks to provide salient information about spatially distributed dynamic fields, such as regional variations in temperature or concentration of a toxic gas. The focus is on deriving qualitative descriptions of salient changes to areas of high-activity that occur during the temporal evolution of the field. The changes reported include region merging or splitting, and hole formation or elimination. Such changes are formally characterized, and a distributed qualitative change reporting (QCR) approach is developed that detects the qualitative changes simply based on the connectivity between the sensor nodes without location information. The efficiency of the QCR approach is investigated using simulation experiments. The results show that the communication cost of the QCR approach in monitoring large-scale phenomena is an order of magnitude lower than that using the standard boundary-based data collection approach, where each node is assumed to have its location information. [Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (Auteur) The present paper examines whether the formal topological characterisation of spatial relations between moving geographic regions provides an adequate basis for the human conceptualisation of motion events for those regions. The paper focuses on gradual changes in topological relationships caused by continuous transformations of the regions (specifically, translations). Using a series of experiments, the conceptualisation and perception of conceptual neighborhoods is investigated. In particular, the role of conceptual neighborhoods in characterising motion events is scrutinised. The experiments employ a grouping paradigm and a custom-made tool for presenting animated icons. The analysis examines whether paths through a conceptual neighborhood graph sufficiently characterise the conceptualisation of the movement of two regions. The results of the experiments show that changes in topological relations—as detailed by paths through a conceptual neighborhood graph—are not sufficient to characterise the cognitive conceptualisation of moving regions. The similarity ratings show clear effects of perceptually and conceptually induced groupings such as identity (which region is moving), reference (whether a larger or a smaller region is moving), and dynamics (whether both regions are moving at the same time). [Termes IGN] topologieRésumé : (Auteur) Recent technological advances in geosensor networks demand new models of distributed computation with dynamic spatial information. This paper presents a computational model of spatial change in dynamic regions (such as may be derived from discretizations of continuous fields) founded on embeddings of graphs in orientable surfaces. Continuous change, connectedness and regularity of dynamic regions are defined and local transition rules are used to constrain region evolution and enable more efficient inference of a region's state. The model provides a framework for the detection of global high-level events based on local low-level ‘snapshot’ spatiotemporal data. The approach has particular relevance to environmental monitoring with geosensor networks, where technological constraints make the detection of global behaviour from local conditions highly advantageous.
