[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Increases in tree mortality rates have been highlighted in different biomes over the past decades. However, disentangling the effects of climate change on the temporal increase in tree mortality from those of management and forest dynamics remains a challenge. Using a modelling approach taking tree and stand characteristics into account, we sought to evaluate the impact of climate change on background mortality for the most common European tree species. We focused on background mortality, which is the mortality observed in a stand in the absence of abrupt disturbances, to avoid confusion with mortality events unrelated to long-term changes in temperature and rainfall. We studied 372 974 trees including 7312 dead trees from forest inventory data surveyed across France between 2009 and 2015. Factors related to competition, stand characteristics, management intensity, and site conditions were the expected preponderant drivers of mortality. Taking these main drivers into account, we detected a climate change signal on 45% of the 43 studied species, explaining an average 6% of the total modelled mortality. For 18 out of the 19 species sensitive to climate change, we evidenced greater mortality with increasing temperature or decreasing rainfall. By quantifying the mortality excess linked to the current climate change for European temperate forest tree species, we provide new insights into forest vulnerability that will prove useful for adapting forest management to future conditions. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Context : Lowering stand density has been suggested to adapt forests to warmer and drier conditions. Whether common dendrometric rules used to guide growth models and support silviculture are still valid at these densities lower than usual needs be tested. This includes (1) estimating the stand growth-density relationship over wider density gradients (‘Langsaeter’s rule’), (2) testing the stability of site index, and (3) ‘Eichhorn’s rule’ (relating site index to stand growth) at lower densities. Additionally, environmental changes call for a more direct inclusion of environmental drivers in growth models.
Material and methods : We investigated the effects of relative stand density (RDI) on stand growth of even-aged stands of sessile oak. We also analyzed effects of climatic conditions to assess whether sessile oak is already at a critical stage that requires adapting forest management. We used a network of silvicultural trials designed to test the effects of maximum density gradients on stand dynamics along climatic gradients.
Results : As predicted by Langsaeter’s rule, gross stand growth increased with RDI then saturated for RDI > 0.4–0.5, mortality began after crown closure, and diameter increment decreased non-linearly with RDI. Dominant height growth first increased with RDI then saturated for RDI > 0.8. Positive effects of RDI on both stand and height growth caused Eichhorn’s rule to be stable over a large range of RDI (0.25–1). Effects of climate predictors were weak and only visible for radial growth indices. They however suggested antagonistic effects of water and temperature constraints in summer and autumn.
Discussion : Langsaeter’s and Eichhorn’s rules were found valid over a large range of RDI values. We suggest using them to guide growth models and management. However, assumptions behind the use of site index as a proxy for stand productivity were invalidated. Weak and opposed effect of temperature in summer and autumn makes the outcome of climate warming on sessile oak growth uncertain.Numéro de notice : A2019-001 Affiliation des auteurs : LIF+Ext (2012-2019) Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.foreco.2018.11.007 Date de publication en ligne : 17/11/2018 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.foreco.2018.11.007 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=91406

[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) There is an increasing demand on the monitoring of the forest resources, on forests statistics, and on projections of future forest resource availability especially in terms of biomass (Leban & Bontemps, 2016). We developed a new method to enrich the forest information produced by the French National French Inventory by the measurement of the wood density. This technological innovation permits the fast and reliable measurement of the wood density on unprepared increments cores collected in the forests by the NFI staff. The cores are passed through a medical Xray scanner. Since 2015, about thirty thousand cores were sampled each year. At the end of this project, in November 2019 we will have a novel data base with wood density measurements on more than one hundred thousand increment cores. We will present several preliminary results that illustrate the different ways to enrich forest information, e.g. (i) the reassessment of the total standing biomass for the main forest species and (ii) the wood density models that can be used for the simulation of the forest biomass changes at the national level for different climatic hypothesis. We will present and discuss the perspective for the analysis and the sharing of this new data base that combines at the national scale level wood density and the usual forest inventory measurements such as DBH, height, age etc. Such data base pave the avenue for a better understanding of the biomass production along different climatic and trophic gradients. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Biomass ratio is a state variable allowing the conversion of the forest growing stock into biomass (Kauppi et al., 2006). This variable is most often considered constant per tree species despite the huge range of intraspecific variability of basic density. Indeed, the factors that influence wood density are numerous: tree growth and age, competition (e.g. forest structure), genetics as well as intra and inter annual climatic variations. In light of such diversity, scientific research into forest biomass characteristics is required to better incorporate the heterogeneity of forests in the forest carbon accounting methods (Bowen et al., 2011).
Materials and methods: In 2016 and 2017 over fifty five thousands increment cores were collected in the field by the French NFI. Wood density measurements were performed at INRA (Leban et al., 2019, this conference) and combined with the French NFI calculation system, biomass ratio can now be computed as a standard. This quantity can now be depicted over stratification variables such as soil water availability. An exploratory and ANOVA-assisted analysis of this gradient was performed.
Results: Biomass ratio was found strongly related to soil water availability, with a decrease of biomass ratio at the hardwood and softwood scale, but no correlation were found at the specie level. Explanations come from the species repartition along the gradients from high wood density to low density driven by soil water availability.
Conclusion: Wood density data acquired on the French NFI allow major steps forward toward the proper estimate of forest biomass resources and of carbon sequestration. Biomass ratio was found correlated with climatic contexts, suggesting that biomass sequestration at constant volume may increase in a warmer climate. But this change will be made through change of composition of the forest rather than an adaptation of the species.

[Vedettes matières IGN] Economie forestièreIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (auteur) Contexte.
Conclusion. A large-scale forest dynamic model to estimate wood resources in the French forests based on NFI information / Timothée Audinot (2019)PermalinkThe French NFI : flexibility at the heart of the design / François Morneau (2019)PermalinkLa filiera foresta-legno francese tra potenziale di mitigazione dei cambiamenti climatici e necessità di adattamento / Philippe Delacote in Agriregionieuropa, anno 14 n° 54 (2018)PermalinkGIS Coop: networks of silvicultural trials for supporting forest management under changing environment / Ingrid Seynave in Annals of Forest Science, vol 75 n° 2 (June 2018)PermalinkRecent growth trends of black pine (Pinus nigra J.F.
