[Termes IGN] puits de carboneRésumé : (auteur) Our aim was to investigate the possible enhancing role of long-term atmospheric CO2 increase on wood density as an essential component of biomass sequestration. We therefore assessed the long-term evolution of wood density over pre-industrial and contemporary periods, in a regional context free of management practices, atmospheric deposition and with restricted climatic change. Dominant trees of Araucaria araucana were sampled in 37 stands distributed throughout its natural distribution over temperate forests of the Chilean Andes Cordillera. Mean ring density (MRD) at 1.30 m was measured by X-ray micro-densitometry. A third-century MRD chronology was built after MRD standardisation by the effects of cambial age and radial growth, simultaneously estimated from a statistical model from rings of the pre-industrial period (1700–1850) to avoid any temporal bias. The age-alone standardised MRD chronology showed restricted fluctuations ranging between 2.0 and 3.2 % over the last three centuries. Multi-decennial fluctuations between ring width and MRD were found qualitatively synchronous and opposed. Accordingly, MRD fluctuations were removed with the age and growth standardisation, highlighting the absence of a historical wood density trend at constant ring size over the whole period. Over the most recent decades however, a slight increase in density was identified, with loss of synchronisation to radial growth. The absence of a long-term signal in wood density of A. araucana, in a context of restricted anthropogenic influence, differs markedly from reports of significant decreases in the Northern Hemisphere. We conclude as part of the analysis done that until now, increasing atmospheric CO2 unlikely would have an impact in wood density. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) In the context of climatic change an increasing attention is paid to the ability of forests to store more carbon as increasing carbon sequestration by forests is equivalent to reducing emissions the release of carbon to the atmosphere. Estimating the quantity of carbon sequestered in the forests is usually based upon the National Forest Inventory statistical measurements. These measurements are converted in estimates of the annual forest increments that in turn are converted in annual biomass increments by the means of models and of average basic density values depending of the availability of wood density data bases. The wood density is very variable among species and is dependant of the annual rings anatomical structure (ring porous, semi-ring porous, diffuse porous, non-porous) and of the growth conditions of the trees (genetic origin, stand age and structure, management, and climate). These different sources of variability of the wood density are not yet taken into account for forests carbon accounting. The objective of this project is to measure the wood density variations on all the thirty thousand trees measured during one year by the technicians of the French National Forest Inventory. A new low cost method was developed for the processing of all the collected increment cores. The increments cores are stored in alveolar polycarbonate plates, dried and scanned with one medical Xray scanner. For each increment core the width of the last five rings was measured on the field and the corresponding wood density obtained by the scanner and a new informatics program. This method is tested for the first time in France and it will provide a new xylotheque and an original wood density data set for all the French tree species measured by the National Forest Inventory. We will present preliminary results for the new measurement proxy of the annual forest biomass increments, illustrate the perspective to analyze the biomass increments in relation with the forests stand structure and with the geographical climatic conditions and discuss the interest to measure on the same samples other wood properties than wood density.
Numéro de notice : 17444 Affiliation des auteurs : LIF (2012-2019) Thématique : FORET Nature : HDR Note de thèse : HDR : Productivité forestière : Lorraine : 2016 nature-HAL : HDR Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=89271 Stand density, tree social status and water stress influence allocation in height and diameter growth of Quercus petraea (Liebl.) / Raphaël Trouvé in Tree Physiology, vol 35 n° 10 (October 2015)

[Termes IGN] stress hydriqueRésumé : (auteur) Even-aged forest stands are competitive communities where competition for light gives advantages to tall individuals, thereby inducing a race for height. These same individuals must however balance this competitive advantage with height-related mechanical and hydraulic risks. These phenomena may induce variations in height–diameter growth relationships, with primary dependences on stand density and tree social status as proxies for competition pressure and access to light, and on availability of local environmental resources, including water. We aimed to investigate the effects of stand density, tree social status and water stress on the individual height–circumference growth allocation (Δh–Δc), in even-aged stands of Quercus petraea Liebl. (sessile oak). Within-stand Δc was used as surrogate for tree social status. We used an original long-term experimental plot network, set up in the species production area in France, and designed to explore stand dynamics on a maximum density gradient. Growth allocation was modelled statistically by relating the shape of the Δh–Δc relationship to stand density, stand age and water deficit. The shape of the Δh–Δc relationship shifted from linear with a moderate slope in open-grown stands to concave saturating with an initial steep slope in closed stands. Maximum height growth was found to follow a typical mono-modal response to stand age. In open-grown stands, increasing summer soil water deficit was found to decrease height growth relative to radial growth, suggesting hydraulic constraints on height growth. A similar pattern was found in closed stands, the magnitude of the effect however lowering from suppressed to dominant trees. We highlight the high phenotypic plasticity of growth in sessile oak trees that further adapt their allocation scheme to their environment. Stand density and tree social status were major drivers of growth allocation variations, while water stress had a detrimental effect on height in the Δh–Δc allocation.
