[Termes IGN] Union EuropéenneRésumé : (Auteur) Europe is home to some of the most innovative minds in the geospatial techology industry, yet its actual global market share is estimated at only 5% (JRC 1996). Although important inroads have been made, the European GI-GIS industry still needs to improve co-ordination and harmonisation to better compete in the global economy. What is dearly needed is some sort of infrastructure to help channel the innovative developments of Small and Medium Entreprises (SMEs) which form the core of the European indutry, into a concerted, competitive economic entity. A focus on interoperability promises to facilitate this process. Here, we present the creation of such an infrastructure, code-named ANVIL, based on emerging new forms of GIS interoperability which go beyond traditional notions of hardware and software interoperability.
