Forest management implies taking into account pressure from animals in fragile-balanced patches. Our goal is to propose maps that would benefit forest planning by reflecting individual movement and space use depending on the animal species and local spatiotemporal environment. The study case focuses on two species, roe deer and red deer, and on a forested site in the northeast of France. Movements of several individuals were analysed from collected GPS locations. Foraging places likely to correspond to intense research behaviour were computed using the First-Passage Time method. These places were assumed as being of interest and were characterized with landscape features and temporal information. Maps were produced to synthetize information about foraging places by defining adapted symbolizations. Then maps about functional space were proposed based on extrapolation of favourable or avoided areas from the characterized observed foraging places and space use. Landscape patches were mapped according to a gradient of potential interest by animals’ species, in order to highlight needs of specific planning actions in the forestry context. Map displays were driven by forestry end-use and designed so that to be compliant to a numeric geographical portal, giving access to different available on-line layers and computed created ones. [Termes IGN] tomographie par GPSRésumé : (auteur) The time‐varying three‐dimensional water vapour field derived from mesoscale Global Positioning System (GPS) tomography data is used to describe the water vapour variability in relation to the dynamics of the atmosphere during convective initiation (CI). The paper presents the theoretical framework of GPS tomography at the mesoscale, including aspects related to the assimilation of independent data (e.g. water vapour profiles issued from meteorological balloon soundings). GPS tomography‐derived water vapour density retrievals are validated against lidar, the Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer and radiosonde data, even if the short three‐day period of the study prevents conclusions about the real accuracy of the GPS tomography technique.
GPS tomography products are used, in synergy with surface and sounding‐derived meteorological variable measurements, satellite imagery and reflectivity composites from the WSR‐88D network and S‐POL radar, to study environmental conditions leading to the 12 June 2002 CI event during the International H2O Project. On this day, CI was triggered simultaneously, shortly after 2100 UTC, in two locations along an old outflow boundary lying east‐west in the vicinity of the Oklahoma–Kansas border. The study focuses on CI to the east, which was triggered at the intersection of the outflow boundary with a distinct southwest–northeast‐oriented moisture convergence line. The latter formed as the result of a cross‐dryline circulation leading to the penetration of dry air meeting with the moister air mass associated with the southerly low‐level flow east of the dryline. These intersecting boundaries appeared to have provided the necessary triggering mechanism for getting moist surface air parcels up to the level of free convection. Tomography‐derived water vapour fields provided observational evidence of the vertical transport of water vapour above the lifting condensation level and the level of free convection to the south of and along the intersecting boundaries.

[Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) A ground-based GPS network has been established over West Africa in the framework of African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) in tight cooperation between French and African institutes. The experimental setup is described and preliminary highlights are given for different applications using these data. Precipitable water vapor (PWV) estimates from GPS are used for evaluating numerical weather prediction (NWP) models and radiosonde humidity data. Systematic tendency errors in model forecasts are evidenced. Correlated biases in NWP model analyses and radiosonde data are evidenced also, which emphasize the importance of radiosonde humidity data in this region. PWV and precipitation are tightly correlated at seasonal and intraseasonal timescales. Almost no precipitation occurs when PWV is smaller than 30 kg m−2. This limit in PWV also coincides well with the location of the intertropical discontinuity. Five distinct phases in the monsoon season are determined from the GPS PWV, which correspond either to transition or stationary periods of the West African Monsoon system. They may serve as a basis for characterizing interannual variability. Significant oscillations in PWV are observed with 10- to 15-day and 15- to 20-day periods, which suggest a strong impact of atmospheric circulation on moisture and precipitation. The presence of a diurnal cycle oscillation in PWV with marked seasonal evolutions is found. This oscillation involves namely different phasing of moisture fluxes in different layers implying the low-level jet, the return flow, and the African Easterly Jet. The broad range of timescales observed with the GPS systems shows a high potential for investigating many atmospheric processes of the West African Monsoon.
