[Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (auteur) Color quality evaluation is key to judging map quality, which can improve data visualization and communication. However, most existing methods for evaluating map colors are tedious and subjective manual methods. In this paper, we study sequential color schemes, a widely used map color type and propose a learning-based approach for evaluating the color quality. The approach consists of two steps. First, we extract and characterize the cartographic factors for determining the quality of sequential color schemes, such as color order, color match, color harmony, color discrimination and color uniformity. Second, we present a model to predict the color quality based on AdaBoost, a type of ensemble learning algorithm with excellent classification performance and use these factors as input data. We conduct a case study based on 781 samples and train the AdaBoost-based model to predict the quality of sequential color schemes. To evaluate the model’s performance, we calculated the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC). The AUC values are 0.983 and 0.977 on the training data and testing data, respectively. These results indicate that the proposed approach can be used to automatically evaluate the quality of sequential color schemes for maps, which helps mapmakers select good colors. This paper introduces an artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm to automatically create various colour schemes. Colour scheme creation is treated as a constrained search problem in a continuous colour space. We considered the gamut of the target device and a series of cartographic rules, such as convention, discrimination, contrast, perceptual uniformity and brightness mirror, in the ABC algorithm and presented detailed initialization, fitness definition, local exploration, and global exploration methods for creating qualitative, sequential and diverging colour schemes. The proposed method is evaluated with a case study, and the results indicate that compared with the brute force search method, the proposed method can create satisfying colour schemes of similar quality but significantly improved efficiency. A common issue in existing methods is that simplification, symbolization and rendering are addressed separately, causing computational and data redundancies that reduce efficiency, especially when handling large complex polygonal data. Here, we present an efficient polygonal data visualization method by organizing the simplification, tessellation and rendering operations into a single mesh generalization process. First, based on the sweep line method, we propose a topology embedded trapezoidal mesh data structure to organize the tessellated polygons. Second, we introduce horizontal and vertical generalization operations to simplify the trapezoidal meshes. Finally, we define a heuristic testing algorithm to efficiently preserve the topological consistency. The method is tested using three OpenStreetMap datasets and compared with the Douglas Peucker algorithm and the Binary Line Generalization tree-based method. The results show that the proposed method improves the rendering efficiency by a factor of six. Efficiency-sensitive mapping applications such as emergency mapping could benefit from this method, which would significantly improve their visualization performances.
