[Termes IGN] Laussédat, AiméRésumé : (Auteur) This journal primarily publishes research at the forefront of developments in photogrammetry. However, from time to time we publish both reviewed papers (for example, Atkinson (1978, 1995) or Petrie and Nolan (2018)) and Editorials (such as Granshaw, 2018) that look back at the development of our discipline over many decades. Many of our recent authors have used terminology (such as intrinsic parameters rather than interior orientation parameters) more akin to usage in computer vision, a much younger discipline than photogrammetry. However, a misconception too far (at least in your Editor's opinion) is the sentiment in some application papers, especially those using structure from motion where the authors may not be geomatics specialists, that photogrammetry is a new discipline. In a computer vision context, at least Sturm (2011) sets the record straight in acknowledging the role of early photogrammetrists. In this unashamedly lengthy Editorial, I wish to look back to the very inception of our discipline, joining our French colleagues in their celebration of the bicentenary of the birth of the widely recognised “father of photogrammetry”, Aimé Laussedat. The tribute to Laussedat on 30th April 2019 in Paris was organised by the Société Française de Photogrammétrie et de Télédétection and the Association Française de Topographie. The Conference Report on pages 224‐225 of this issue provides an account of this event. The final section of this Editorial paints a broader picture of the origins of photogrammetry.
