[Termes IGN] système de gestion de connaissancesRésumé : (Auteur) Digital cartography offers exciting opportunities for recording indigenous knowledge, particularly in contexts where a people's relationship to the land has high cultural significance. Canada's north offers a useful case study of both the opportunities and challenges of such projects. Through the Geomatics and Cartographic Research Centre (GCRC), Inuit peoples have been invited to become partners in innovative digital mapping projects, including creating atlases of traditional place names, recording the patterns and movement of sea ice, and recording previously uncharted and often shifting traditional routes over ice and tundra. Such projects have generated interest in local communities because of their potential to record and preserve traditional knowledge and because they offer an attractive visual and multimedia interface that can address linguistic and cultural concerns. But given corporations' growing interest in the natural resources of the Arctic and the concomitant rise in government concern about claims to Arctic sovereignty, such maps may also be of interest to a broad range of actors and for a variety of purposes. Because these projects rely heavily upon, and record, oral knowledge, and because they convert such knowledge into highly malleable and easily disseminated digital content, they raise challenging issues around informed consent, intellectual and cultural property, and privacy. This article identifies and examines these issues and describes the collaborative and interdisciplinary research established to identify and address the use of traditional knowledge in digital cartography. [Termes IGN] ontologieRésumé : (Auteur) This article discusses a two-pronged approach to designing and developing an online, interactive multimedia – cybercartographic – atlas that combines critical academic perspectives with Anishinaabe approaches to understanding in order to “tell the story” of the Robinson Huron Treaty process in a way intended to enhance awareness of Anishinaabe perspectives and expose the epistemological and ontological roots of colonialism. Building on the work that created the Treaties Module of the Living Cybercartographic Atlas of Indigenous Perspectives and Knowledge, this atlas project continues to reflect the comprehensiveness and multidimensionality of Robinson Huron Treaty–based relationship processes. The article focuses on some of the performative aspects of this atlas project, such as iterative processes and spatializing history, that contribute to its success in reflecting Anishinaabe perspectives and providing the basis for a richer understanding of the treaty process. [Termes IGN] logiciel libreRésumé : (Auteur) Digital web atlases can incorporate perspectives derived from diverse participants or communities to create and present narratives using qualitative and quantitative information structured around a set of maps as organizational and analytical tools. Development of such an atlas requires a transdisciplinary team tor contend with complexity in subject matter, technologies, and project dynamics. Technologies required are potentially as much an obstacle to some potential participants as they may be necessary to the fulfilment of a project’s outreach and communication goals. This paper describes the Cybercartographic Atlas of the Lake Huron Treaty Relationship Process, the open source atlas toolkit used to implement it, and features of the toolkit that are intended to encourage transdisciplinary participation. The discussion explicitly addresses issues related to the iterative processes, at multiple scales, required to develop atlas projects within an academic research setting while using and creating open source software.
