[Termes IGN] format de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) For as long we have had computers data compression has been an important issue. Essentially there are two reasons for data compression : compressed data require less disk space and communication of compressed data is faster. Already days of computers file size was an issue, which required an efficient use of limited disk space. In modern times, disk space seems unlimited, but for many types of data the file size can be huge. Communicating and using these files require efficient storage and thus data compression. A world of maritime applications with things like Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV), Remote Operate Vehicles (ROV), Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), and vessel traffic management. A world where more and more tonnage enters and exits the harbours in vessels that seem to be getting bigger and heavier by the year. Accurate information is required about water depth, vessel movement, tidal waves, and cetera. What is the current status of generalisation ? How much can be done automated ? How emcompassing are the algorithms nowadays ? Dieter Neuffer, generalisation Product Manager from Laser-Scan, gives the answers. [Termes IGN] navigationRésumé : (Auteur) For some time now satellites have been part of our daily lives. Satellites are used for communication, weather forecasting, scientific research, etc. The application which has infiltrated into our daily lives most is satellite navigation. Many people have a navigation system in their car and anybody can purchase a GPS-receiver for recreational purposes. The basis for these applications are tens of satellites that have been built and launched solely for navigational purposes.
