[Termes IGN] sismicitéRésumé : (auteur) We investigate how two decades of coseismic deformations affect time series of GPS station coordinates (Global Navigation Satellite System) and what constraints geodetic observations give on earthquake scaling laws. We developed a simple but rapid model for coseismic deformations, assuming different earthquake scaling relations, that we systematically applied on earthquakes with magnitude larger than 4. We found that coseismic displacements accumulated during the last two decades can be larger than 10m locally and that the cumulative displacement is not only due to large earthquakes but also to the accumulation of many small motions induced by smaller earthquakes. Then, investigating a global network of GPS stations, we demonstrate that a systematic global modeling of coseismic deformations helps greatly to detect discontinuities in GPS coordinate time series, which are still today one of the major sources of error in terrestrial reference frame construction (e.g., the International Terrestrial Reference Frame). We show that numerous discontinuities induced by earthquakes are too small to be visually detected because of seasonal variations and GPS noise that disturb their identification. However, not taking these discontinuities into account has a large impact on the station velocity estimation, considering today’s precision requirements. Finally, six groups of earthquake scaling laws were tested. Comparisons with our GPS time series analysis on dedicated earthquakes give insights on the consistency of these scaling laws with geodetic observations and Okada coseismic approach. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) We propose a new semi-parametric approach to the joint segmentation of multiple series corrupted by a functional part. This problem appears in particular in geodesy where GPS permanent station coordinate series are affected by undocumented artificial abrupt changes and additionally show prominent periodic variations. Detecting and estimating them are crucial, since those series are used to determine averaged reference coordinates in geosciences and to infer small tectonic motions induced by climate change. We propose an iterative procedure based on Dynamic Programming for the segmentation part and Lasso estimators for the functional part. Our Lasso procedure, based on the dictionary approach, allows us to both estimate smooth functions and functions with local irregularity, which permits more flexibility than previous proposed methods. This yields to a better estimation of the bias part and improvements in the segmentation. The performance of our method is assessed using simulated and real data. In particular, we apply our method to data from four GPS stations in Yarragadee, Australia. Our estimation procedure results to be a reliable tool to assess series in terms of change detection and periodic variations estimation giving an interpretable estimation of the functional part of the model in terms of known functions. [Termes IGN] International Terrestrial Reference FrameRésumé : (auteur) Ideally, the origin of the Terrestrial Reference Frame (TRF) is defined as the center of mass of the whole Earth system, the time evolution of its orientation is such that no global net rotation of the whole Earth’s surface is possible and the TRF scale is specified through the adoption of some physical constants and time-scale. These parameters need to be accurately determined since their choice has an influence on many Earth’s science applications. The aim of the task force “External evaluation of the Terrestrial Reference Frame” is to review all the applications for which the TRF accuracy is of fundamental importance. As the TRF choice has an influence on the interpretation of the results in these specific applications, we investigate if some evaluation procedures could be established. We classified the methods that allow evaluation of the TRF using ground, geodetic data or models that have not been used in the TRF construction, based on their expected contributions. Some of these methods have been applied to the latest International Terrestrial Reference System realizations and the results are presented here. Although further analysis will be necessary to deliver a more precise error budget, our findings demonstrate that the most recent realizations of the ITRS are more accurate than the previous in terms of origin and scale rate definition. The current level of ITRF2008 accuracy is likely to be at the level of 0.5 mm/year along each origin component and better than 0.3 mm/year in the scale rate according to the most recent studies.
