[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Altrough GIS is now commoly used for the manipulation and, in some cases, analysis of spatially-referenced data there have been relatively few applications to migration data and even fewer in an historical setting. Here we show how the powerful database management system, facilities of a GIS, together with the analytical capabilities of a statistical modelling system, can be used to describe and analyse records of moves made by individuals in Britain, extending over a period of 200 years. The data comprise records provided by members of Family History and Genealogy Societies in Lancashire and Cumbria. This has generated a database of over 6000 moves, undertaken by some 1800 individuals. We have analysed the data in two settings. First, in order to analyse subsets of the data and to produce effective displays, we have analysed the data in an ARCINGRES setting, using the DATABASE INTEGRATOR facilities available in Version 6 of ARC/INFO. Second, in order to perform statistical analyses of the data we have used S-Plus to explore characteristics of particular subsets of the data. The fact that the data extend over 200 years means that we can also paint a picture of the dynamics of migration. Plans are underway to extend the data collection in order to produce a comprehensive picture of longitudinal migration histories in Britain as a whole. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Although urban planning is an obvious application for GIS, its introduction has not affected the planning process as much as could be expected. GIS implementation is a long process, specially since it requires the drafting of digital base maps. This paper suggests one need not wait for GIS to be fully implemented, but start exploring how urban planning can incorporate, modify and extend this new tool. Planners do not require extremely detailed data, but they must have the right information and they may use simple digital maps, now available in most cities. This paper explores a side-track in improving GIS applications in urban planning and describes the circumstances which make it a viable proposition, as well illustrating some of the possible results. Materials and results produced during a workshop held in 1992 with a group of students from the Torino Faculty of Architecture are used as a case. Two issues were highlighted : a) how street segment geographic unit and line thematicmaps are a effective means to describe urban patterns and b) how quality variables can be employed in describing urban morphology. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) ECRU is a research project for the development of an Information System to be used by municipal administrations and technical operators. The system provides a complete response to the regulations required (municipalities must develop an acoustic improvement plan and control of incompatibility between noise emission and human activity). The prototype information system will help the development of improvement plans for noise pollution, providing functionalities for mapping and for the detailed study of urban noise pollution. Data from the city of Ancona was used to develop the prototype system. The mathematical model used was " Gluck-Santoboni " (Istituto di Acustica " O.M. CORBINO " C.R.N.). The results obtained revealed numerous examples of incompatibility. Simulation of the outcome of various types of improvement measures showed the feasibility of obtaining the conditions required by the regulations in the DPCM of 1 March 1991. Future research is aimed at introducing a better mathematical model (with more parameters) and a set of guidelines for the type of improvement measures to be adopted in particular situations. [Termes IGN] transport de matières dangereusesRésumé : (Auteur) The transport phase is an often neglected element in the risk assessment of non-nuclear hazardous waste life cycles. Data on special and hazardous waste movements originally collected by the Greater London Council during the 1980s give detailed information about waste consignments from cradle to grave, including UK grid references for waste producer and disposal sites, total tonnage and hazard category. Aqueous special wastes were chosen as a case study in wich a geographic information system was used to model the routing of waste consignments. Deficiencies in the consignment records required several assumptions to be made and various scenarios explored. Roads identified as likely to see passage of these waste materials, together with the estimated levels of tanker traffic, were then integrated with information on accident probabilities, groundwater vulnerability and the distribution of population to evaluate the risks the waste movements posed to different localities. Comparisons between specific disposal sites were undertaken and these assessments were also expanded to encompass the wider region. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Rapid urbanisation in the developing world is causing a lack of municipal ressources with public services falling further behind demand. New and redesigned settlements are needed but appropriate plots of land are not usually available. A more efficient distribution of land is required. Land readjustment is one of the approaches to deal with these urbanisation problems. This paper briefly explains the land readjustment process and its potential use in urban development, then illustrates the development of a GIS-based land readjustment model for better land management in rural-to-urban land-use change procedures.
