[Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) The objective of this study was to establish an operational model of work efficiency (net or productive work time per tree) for high-pruning of young silver birch depending on pruning method, pole saw type, operator, pruning height and branch characteristics. The final model included number of branches, cross-sectional area of the thickest branch at the cut, pruning height, pruning method (target or flush pruning) and operator as independent variables. Work time increased with increasing values of each of the three numeric variables. For a given pruning height the number of branches was for all practical purposes more influential than the size of the largest branch. Target pruning was significantly faster than flush pruning, all else being equal. The variation in work efficiency for the five operators in the study spanned a range almost twice as large as that attributed to pruning method. The mean work time for other activities during the pruning operation (supportive work time) was estimated at 17% of the productive work time for pruning. [Termes IGN] tectonique des plaquesRésumé : (auteur) Understanding how and when far-field continuous motions lead to giant subduction earthquakes remains a challenge. An important limitation comes from an incomplete description of aseismic mass fluxes at depth along plate boundaries. Here we analyse Earth’s gravity field variations derived from GRACE satellite data in a wide space-time domain surrounding the Mw 9.0 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake. We show that this earthquake is the extreme expression of initially silent deformation migrating from depth to the surface across the entire subduction system. Our analysis indeed reveals large-scale gravity and mass changes throughout three tectonic plates and connected slabs, starting a few months before March 2011. Before the Tohoku-Oki earthquake rupture, the gravity variations can be explained by aseismic extension of the Pacific plate slab at mid-upper mantle depth, concomitant with increasing seismicity in the shallower slab. For more than two years after the rupture, the deformation propagated far into the Pacific and Philippine Sea plate interiors, suggesting that subduction accelerated along 2,000 km of the plate boundaries in March 2011. This gravitational image of the earthquake’s long-term dynamics provides unique information on deep and crustal processes over intermediate timescales, which could be used in seismic hazard assessment. [Termes IGN] restauration d'imageRésumé : (auteur) The aim of this paper was to propose a new methodology for preprocessing and enhancing C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images for the automatic detection of marine oil slicks. The proposed methodology includes three processing levels: preprocessing, thresholding, and binary cleaning. The first level is to correct the heterogeneity of brightness in SAR images caused by the non-Lambertian reflection of the radar signal on the sea surface. This heterogeneity can be justified by: the distance from the nadir (incidence angle effect), the interaction between wind direction and radar pulse, and the wide swath mode. The second level consists of a thresholding step. The third level is to clean the binary output images from noise residues. Several preprocessing and cleaning methods have been tested and evaluated by a qualification engine that compares the automatically detected patches with a training data set of manually detected dark patches. The training data set includes oil slicks and lookalikes. As a result, the “best” preprocessing method that homogenizes the brightness of C-band SAR scenes and optimizes the automatic detection of marine oil slicks is based on an adaptation to the C-band MODel. As for the cleaning process, the tested morphological methods show that small object removal followed by a morphological closing optimizes the automatic detection of marine oil slicks.
