[Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (Auteur) Nowadays, the amount of geographic data is permanently increasing. One key issue to take advantage of these data is to be able to evaluate their fitness for use and their complexity. We describe in this paper a system enabling a user to discover the content of geographic databases based on a formalization of their specifications, i.e. enabling the user to discover which entities of interest are represented in a given database, and how they are represented. The system uses a global 'domain' ontology describing the topographic real world entities, which can be queried by the user to express his/her needs. Some local (or application) ontologies are used to formalize the content of database specifications. They are annotated with concepts from the global ontology. The described system is implemented as a web application and includes a web mapping solution for the visualization of data samples. [Termes IGN] web sémantiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In order to benefit as much as possible from geographical information, users have expressed a strong need to integrate their data with other data. The need to integrate historical data is particularly expressed as it often contains invaluable information which is often unmapped or not represented in current maps or data. Unfortunately, easily accessible data integration treatments are not yet available for users. This paper aims to introduce a solution to solve this problem by explaining the building of a data integration web platform, called SEREDONA, a French acronym for "SErvice de REcalage de DONnees Anciennes" which can be translated as follows: "Web service platform for the adjustment of historical data". The approach to build this platform, its functionalities and its architecture are fully described. In particular the architecture is based on OGC Web Services (Web Map Service, Web Feature Service and Web Processing Service), Open Source components and the principles of a service oriented architecture. Thus, it allows using the developed components in a more global spatial data infrastructure or separately in other contexts. [Termes IGN] spécification de produitRésumé : (Auteur) In map design, user’s choices of graphical signs may be unsuitable to their needs. In particular, colours choices may disturb the reading and understanding of maps. We propose a methodology to help users to make personalized and original colours specifications. It implies offering cartographic expertise and favouring creativity. The paper handles with knowledge for colours specification coming from visual perception, cognitive sciences, graphic semiotics, cartography and art. We specify a knowledge base made-up of cartographic rules (semantic, contrasts and conventional), artistic rules and inspiration sources (map samples and famous paintings). The COLorLEGend system based on this knowledge allows users to make various colours specifications and maps, depending on cartographic and artistic colours uses. [Termes IGN] sommet (relief)Résumé : (Auteur) The French National Mapping Agency (IGN) plans to renew all the topographic maps at 1:25 000 and 1:50 000 scale. The New Base Map project has been launched in order to produce a flow line for topographic maps from a vector geographic database, and decrease costs of topographic map production. The project aims also to automate the extraction of contour lines, and take advantage of the high-resolution digital terrain model (DTM) data recently available in the agency. These data come from automatic correlation, or they are produced using new sensors (lidar or radar). The high-resolution DTM is a breakthrough to extract cartographic elements such as the cartographic contour lines, the points of mountain pass and the summits. In a precedent paper, we presented a research for producing cartographic contour lines from DTM. Since then, the method has been developed and implemented at the IGN in order to have a production tool for the contour lines. The first part of this paper provides technical details regarding the extraction of contour lines with the problems resolved during the implementation. The second part will introduce our method for extracting the mountain pass and summits from high-resolution DTM. The final section will include the results and summarize the findings. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) Three-dimensional (3D) city models are intended to represent the geometry along with the appearance of the reality. In some cases, photos are precisely mapped as texture onto the geometric model, which then renders a realistic impression of the underlying environment. In other cases, the models are visualized in a more abstract way. This paper is dedicated to investigating the relation of level of abstraction, information density and storage capacity for the representation of a 3D city model. Increasing the level of abstraction usually leads to the decrease of information density to be processed. Accordingly, the general storage capacity will decrease as well. Since a higher level of abstraction is less bound to photorealistic aspects, it may allow further semantic information to be accommodated in the visualisation process. If the level of abstraction in a city model increases in a well-controlled way so that the characteristic features are enhanced while non-relevant information is inhibited, the user’s cognitive load during task completion may be reduced. This implies an increased efficiency of information communication. Using image segmentation algorithms, the elements within a facade per unit of area are successively reduced while preserving the characteristic structures within the image. The segmented image holds the sufficient information to be recognized in the environment. We treat the three concepts, level of abstraction, information density and storage capacity, as fundamental variables for the visualisation of building facades. To deal with these concepts, we organizing them on a continuum, which enables us to find a tradeoff between a potential loss of information and the level of usage for various tasks.
