[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A novel approach to color image segmentation (CIS) in scanned archival topographic maps of the 19th century is presented. Archival maps provide unique information for GIS-based change detection and are the only spatially contiguous data sources prior to the establishment of remote sensing. Processing such documents is challenging due to their very low graphical quality caused by ageing, manual production and scanning. Typical artifacts are high degrees of mixed and false coloring, as well as blurring in the images. Existing approaches for segmentation in cartographic documents are normally presented using well-conditioned maps. The CIS approach presented here uses information from the local image plane, the frequency domain and color space. As a first step, iterative clustering is based on local homogeneity, frequency of homogeneity-tested pixels and similarity. By defining a peak-finding rule, “hidden” color layer prototypes can be identified without prior knowledge. Based on these prototypes a constrained seeded region growing (SRG) process is carried out to find connected regions of color layers using color similarity and spatial connectivity. The method was tested on map pages with different graphical properties with robust results as derived from an accuracy assessment. The importance of topological relationships between spatial objects has been recognized a long time ago. Using the well known 9-intersection model for describing such relationships, a lot of different topological relationships can be distinguished. For the query language of a database system, it is not desirable to have such a large number of topological predicates. Particularly the query language should not be extended by a lot of predicate names. It is desirable to build new relationships from existing ones, for example to coarse the granularity. This paper describes how a database system user can define and use her own topological predicates. We show algorithms for computing such predicates in an efficient way. Last, we compare these general versions with specialized implementations of topological predicates. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a novel method to model urban land use conversion using support vector machines (SVMs), a new generation of machine learning algorithms used in the classification and regression domains. This method derives the relationship between rural-urban land use change and various factors, such as population, distance to road and facilities, and surrounding land use. Our study showed that SVMs are an effective approach to estimating the land use conversion model, owing to their ability to model non-linear relationships, good generalization performance, and achievement of a global and unique optimum. The rural-urban land use conversions of New Castle County, Delaware between 1984-1992, 1992-1997, and 1997-2002 were used as a case study to demonstrate the applicability of SVMs to urban expansion modeling. [Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (Auteur) Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are rapidly emerging as the prominent technology for monitoring physical phenomena. However, large scale WSNs are known to suffer from coverage holes, i.e., large regions of deployment area where no sensing coverage can be provided. Such holes are the result of hardware failures, extensive costs for redeployment or the hostility of deployment areas. Coverage holes can adversely affect the accurate representation of natural phenomena that are monitored by a WSN. In this work, we propose to exploit the spatial correlation of physical phenomena to make monitoring systems more resilient to coverage holes. We show that a phenomenon can be interpolated inside a coverage hole with a high level of accuracy from the available nodal data given a model of its spatial correlation. However, due to energy limitations of sensor nodes it is imperative to perform this interpolation in an energy efficient manner that minimizes communication among nodes. In this paper, we present highly energy efficient methods for spatial interpolation in WSNs. First, we build a correlation model of the phenomenon being monitored in a distributed manner. Then, a purely localized and distributed spatial interpolation scheme based on Kriging interpolates the phenomenon inside coverage holes. We test the cost and accuracy of our scheme with extensive simulations and show that it is significantly more energy efficient than global interpolations and remarkably more accurate than simple averaging.
