[Termes IGN] traitement interactifRésumé : (Auteur) Providing an adequate route description requires in-depth spatial knowledge of the route in question. In this article, we demonstrate that despite having travelled a route recently and having much experience of the area in question, an individual may lack such a degree of knowledge. Previous research and experience informs us that a map is an effective tool for bridging gaps in one’s spatial knowledge. In this article, we propose an approach, known as an Interactive Route Description, for defining and interpreting route descriptions interactively with a map. This approach is based on the concept of annotating the map in question and allows the aforementioned gap in one’s spatial knowledge to be bridged. An additional benefit of defining route descriptions in this way is that it facilitates automatic parsing and in turn offers many potential applications. One such application, illustrated in this paper, is the automatic transformation to other representations of the description such as turn-by-turn instructions. [Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (Auteur) The current technological evolutions enter 3D geo-informatics into their digital age, enabling new potential applications in the field of virtual tourism, pleasure, entertainment and cultural heritage. It is argued that 3D information provides the natural way of navigation. However, personalization is a key aspect in a navigation system, since a route that incorporates user preferences is ultimately more suitable than the route with the shortest distance or travel time. Usually, user’s preferences are expressed as a set of weights that regulate the degree of importance of the scene metadata on the route selection process. These weights, however, are defined by the users, setting the complexity to the user’s side, which makes personalization an arduous task. In this paper, we propose an alternative approach in which metadata weights are estimated implicitly and transparently to the users, transferring the complexity to the system side. This is achieved by introducing a relevance feedback on-line learning strategy which automatically adjusts metadata weights by exploiting information fed back to the system about the relevance of user’s preferences judgments given in a form of pair-wise comparisons. Practically implementing a relevance feedback algorithm presents the limitation that several pair-wise comparisons (samples) are required to converge to a set of reliable metadata weights. For this reason, we propose in this paper a weight rectification strategy that improves weight estimation by exploiting metadata interrelations defined through an ontology. In the sequel, a genetic optimization algorithm is incorporated to select the most user preferred routes based on a multi-criteria minimization approach. To increase the degree of personalization in 3D navigation, we have also introduced an efficient algorithm for estimating 3D trajectories around objects of interest by merging best selected 2D projected views that contain faces which are mostly preferred by the users. We have conducted simulations and comparisons with other approaches either in the field of on-line learning or route selection using objective metrics in terms of precision and recall values. The results indicate that our system yields on average a 13.76 % improvement of precision as regards the learning strategy and an improvement of 8.75 % regarding route selection. In addition, we conclude that the ontology driven weight rectification strategy can reduce the number of samples (pair-wise comparisons) required of 76 % to achieve the same precision. Qualitative comparisons have been also performed using a use case route scenario in the city of Athens. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) Widespread use of GPS devices and ubiquity of remotely sensed geospatial images along with cheap storage devices have resulted in vast amounts of digital data. More recently, with the advent of wireless technology, a large number of sensor networks have been deployed to monitor many human, biological and natural processes. This poses a challenge in many data rich application domains now: how to best choose the datasets to solve specific problems? In particular, some of the datasets may be redundant and their inclusion in analysis may not only be time consuming, but also lead to erroneous conclusions. On the other hand, excluding some of the datasets hastily might skew the observations drawn. We propose the concept of data support as the basis for efficient, cost-effective and intelligent use of geospatial data in order to reduce uncertainty in the analysis and consequently in the results. Data support is defined as the process of determining the information utility of a data source to help decide which one to include or exclude to improve cost-effectiveness in existing data analysis. In this paper we use mutual information—a concept popular in information theory as a measure to compute information gain or loss between two datasets—as the basis of computing data support. The flexibility and effectiveness of the approach are demonstrated using an application in the hydrological analysis domain, specifically, watersheds in the state of Nebraska. [Termes IGN] service fondé sur la positionRésumé : (Auteur) The popularity of location-based services (LBSs) leads to severe concerns on users’ privacy. With the fast growth of Internet applications such as online social networks, more user information becomes available to the attackers, which allows them to construct new contextual information. This gives rise to new challenges for user privacy protection and often requires improvements on the existing privacy-preserving methods. In this paper, we classify contextual information related to LBS query privacy and focus on two types of contexts—user profiles and query dependency: user profiles have not been deeply studied in LBS query privacy protection, while we are the first to show the impact of query dependency on users’ query privacy. More specifically, we present a general framework to enable the attackers to compute a distribution on users with respect to issuing an observed request. The framework can model attackers with different contextual information. We take user profiles and query dependency as examples to illustrate the implementation of the framework and their impact on users’ query privacy. Our framework subsequently allows us to show the insufficiency of existing query privacy metrics, e.g., k-anonymity, and propose several new metrics. In the end, we develop new generalisation algorithms to compute regions satisfying users’ privacy requirements expressed in these metrics. By experiments, our metrics and algorithms are shown to be effective and efficient for practical usage. [Termes IGN] service fondé sur la positionRésumé : (Auteur) Mix-zones are recognized as an alternative and complementary approach to spatial cloaking based location privacy protection. Unlike spatial cloaking techniques that perturb the location resolution through location k-anonymization, mix-zones break the continuity of location exposure by ensuring that users’ movements cannot be traced while they are inside a mix-zone. In this paper, we provide an overview of some known attacks that make mix-zones on road networks vulnerable and discuss a set of counter measures to make road network mix-zones attack-resilient. Concretely, we categorize the vulnerabilities of road network mix-zones into two classes: one due to the road network characteristics and user mobility, and the other due to the temporal, spatial and semantic correlations of location queries. We propose efficient road network mix-zone construction techniques that are resilient to attacks based on road network characteristics. Furthermore, we enhance the road network mix-zone framework with the concept of delay-tolerant mix-zones that introduce a combination of spatial and temporal shifts in the location exposure of the users to achieve higher anonymity. We study the factors that impact on the effectiveness of each of these attacks and evaluate the efficiency of the counter measures through extensive experiments on traces produced by GTMobiSim at different scales of geographic maps. [Termes IGN] trace numériqueRésumé : (Auteur) The participatory sensing paradigm, through the growing availability of cheap sensors in mobile devices, enables applications of great social and business interest, e.g., electrosmog exposure measurement and early earthquake detection. However, users’ privacy concerns regarding their activity traces need to be adequately addressed as well. The existing static privacy-enabling approaches, which hide or obfuscate data, offer some protection at the expense of data value. These approaches do not offer privacy guarantees and heterogeneous user privacy requirements cannot be met by them. In this paper, we propose a user-side privacy-protection scheme; it adaptively adjusts its parameters, in order to meet personalized location-privacy protection requirements against adversaries in a measurable manner. As proved by simulation experiments with artificial- and real-data traces, when feasible, our approach not only always satisfies personal location-privacy concerns, but also maximizes data utility (in terms of error, data availability, area coverage), as compared to static privacy-protection schemes.
