[Termes IGN] scèneRésumé : (Auteur) In many GIS applications, background images enrich the presentation or are used for data capture. Geometrically, such images possess a defined, homogeneous geometry. They are orthophotos. The most accurate and expensive orthophotos are True OrthoImages (TOI), which represent object space truly. TOI generation requires a set of overlapping images which together provide 100 per cent visibility of scene, a Digital Surface Model (DSM) and proper geometric and radiometric processing of occluded areas. DSM data capture accounts for about 90+ per cent of costs and makes TOI genration rather expensive. The author elaborates upon the significance and generation of TOIs and discusses technique to reduce the cost of DSM data collection. [Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (Auteur) Recent years have seen the launch of a number of remote sensing satellites equipped with advanced imaging sensors. The high spatial resolution of the imagery provided by the sensors, which have become operational, is of interest for thematic and topographic mapping. Increasingly the systems are designed and operated by commercial companies. These developments were the reason to consider today's status of remote sensing technology in greater detail. The considerations are accompanied by some historical notes and a view on the future.
