[Termes IGN] Terre (planète)Résumé : (Auteur) DLR's Xband interferometric SAR system onboard the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) has been flown successfully in February 2000 and acquired 3660 Gbytes of raw data to be processed to a near global Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the Earth with an absolute height accuracy of +16m. Before starting the operational processing deferent kinds of calibration and motion compensation activities based on the attitude and position data and recorded instrument housekeeping data have to be performed. The preliminary results achieved over ocean test areas show the absolute height error and the relative error from the radar noise within specification. The processing and archiving facility is operational and the complete data set will be processed and available to the customers till mid 2003. While there is considerable familiarity with one technology or the other, they are not often examined in terms of their mutually similar characteristics or equally those that are dissimilar. The purpose of this paper is to summarise those factors which will ultimately help to determine whether one technology or the other is appropriate for a particular application. We present two examples to illustrate and suggest that in many ways they can be viewed as complementary rather than competitive technologies. The models were based on photogrammetric measurements from aerial photographs on one hand and auxiliary spatial data from different data pools on the other hand. The measurements were taken with an analytical plotter (ZEISS P3) which was connected to a CADprogramme (Bentley MicroStation). The measurements included the landsurface as well as surfaces of different forest stands, roads, single trees and houses. Objects close to the planned impacts (powerlines) were measured, the other objects were modelled based on auxiliary spatial data. The planned powerlines were also modelled with MicroStation. In contrast to photographic layout manipulations, this method is based on 3D data. That allows to visualise the impact on the landscape from each position within the model and to calculate quantitative parameters like sensitivity of the landscape, visibility of the impact, etc. on a solid 3D geometric basis. There were two categories of parameters derived from the model. The first was used to assess the sensitivity of the landscape to possible impacts. The other category is used to quantify the impact.
