[Termes IGN] zone à risqueRésumé : (Auteur) Georeferenced highresolution satellite images can be used for acquisition of topographic information, navigation and visualisation for various environmental studies. The present study is part of the multidisciplinary EU project GEOWARN related to monitoring, warning and emergency planning for volcanic hazards in the island of Nisyros, Greece. Here, the main aim was the orthorectification of a 1m resolution pansharpened IKONOS Geo image of Nisyros island. For the orthorectification, a digital elevation model (DEM) with a cell size of 2 m and an RMS accuracy of ca. 3.5 m was used, as well as 38 selected ground control points (GCPs) measured with differential GPS. An objecttopixel space transformation using the ground control points was computed using two different models, a reliefcorrected affine transformation and the polynomial mapping functions of Kratky. These transformations were used for orthorectification and the orthopboto accuracy was evaluated using GCPs as check points. Postprocessing for radiometric improvement of the orthophotos was applied. The ortbophoto and the DEM served as basic tools for subsequent base mapping and visualisation. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Detailed vegetation databases and associated maps of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a rugged, forested area of more than 2000 km2, were constructed to support resource management activities of the U.S. National Park Service (NPS). These detailed vegetation databases and associated maps have a terrain relief exceeding 1700 m and a continuous forest cover over 95% of the Park. The requirement to use 1:12,000 and 1:40,000scale color infrared aerial photographs as the primary data source for mapping overstory and understory vegetation, respectively, necessitated the integration of analog photointerpretation with both digital softcopy photogrammetry and geographic information system (GIS) procedures to overcome problems associated with excessive terrain relief and a lack of ground control. Applications of the vegetation database and associated largescale maps include assessments of vegetation patterns related to management activities and quantification of forest fire fuels. The method is characterized by 16 search directions to find the steepest slope direction from a grid point to the nearest and second nearest contour lines, an interpolation along the steepest slope segment chain, an improved identification of slope grid points, and a monotone interpolation provided by a simple cubic Hermit function to interpolate slope grid points. Noticeable improvements are achieved in the generated DEM from the proposed method against the DEM produced by the Geological Survey Institute (GSI) of Japan. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) The mapping of volcanic activity such as lava and pyroclastic flows and mudflows on a real-time basis during eruptions is very important for event monitoring and prediction for disaster mitigation. These events are usually dynamic and of short duration. In this paper, a real-time volcanic activity mapping system utilizing a single ground-based digital camera is described. This automatic system, which produces ortho-images as a final output from digital landscape images, is designed for real-time monitoring. Each recorded image is first rectified to a reference image generated from a DEM of the volcano. This produces a textured image of known location and orientation. The rectification is carried out by matching between the common skyline edge that appears both in the digital landscape image and in the reference image. The rectified landscape image is then converted to an ortho-image map using the same DEM of the volcano. Through this system, ortho-image maps showing volcanic activity are automatically generated in real-time. This helps chronological short-term change analysis of volcanic activity. Also, volcanic activities mapped by the system can be analysed by volcanologists to assist in any disaster prevention associated with a volcanic eruption. [Termes IGN] vue 3DRésumé : (Auteur) In the year 1988, a new topographical map 1:50,000 of the Mount Everest region was published by the National Geographic Society. The full map content was derived from aerial images of scale 1:35,000, acquired in a 1984 photogrammetric flight. This highly acclaimed topographical map, produced with Swiss photogrammetric and cartographic know-how, serves until nowadays as an important work of reference. We took the analogue data (images, contours), converted them into digital form through scanning, and produced a texture-mapped 3D computer model. With a DTM of 10 m grid-size and natural texture pixel-size of 1 m this model is currently the best dataset available for an area of 25 by 25 km around the summit of Mount Everest. This paper reports about the production procedure of the model and shows some high-resolution photorealistic visualization results. The dataset has been used in the meantime by cartographers and animation experts for the production of new map-related visualization products and is much sought after by scientists of various disciplines.
