Such a mapping system mounted in the appropriate vehicle permits “rapid” mapping of road or rail centrelines. To date, data collected from rapid mapping has been post-processed in a traditional least squares estimation of coordinates, or passed through a Kalman filter for real-time position estimation. In this paper a truly four-dimensional approach is described. This approach yields a continuous map of the linear feature (rather than a model composed of discrete points), and allows for an interesting treatment of raw observations. The paper introduces the four-dimensional model and required observation equations, provides a brief discussion of the model solution using sparse matrix techniques, and mentions a few applications of the model.
