[Termes IGN] infrastructure nationale des données localiséesRésumé : (Auteur) This work proposes an architectural style, a pattern, for spatial data infrastructures (SDIs). This style provides a tool and a shared vocabulary to help system architects to design these infrastructures, and facilitates the exchange of knowledge about them. This style is defined under the component-and-connector architectural viewtype, extending the client-server and shared-data styles. The style has been created after analyzing six of the most relevant SDIs and geo-service architectural proposals. Several architectural elements that these proposals have not properly addressed are considered. Three real projects, with published architectural views or models, have been examined to verify the applicability of the style. The proposed style offers a systematization and refinement of knowledge about SDIs, grounded in well-known concepts in software architecture. Yet, the explicit consideration of scaling operations when modeling uncertainty is rarely found. In this study, a neural network-based data model was investigated for representing geographical objects with scale-induced indeterminate boundaries. Two types of neural units, combined with two types of activation function, comprise the processing core of the model, where the activation function can model either hard or soft transition zones. The construction of complex fuzzy regions, as well as lines and points, is discussed and illustrated with examples. It is shown how the level of detail that is apparent in the boundary at a given scale can be controlled through the degree of smoothness of each activation function. Several issues about the practical implementation of the model are discussed and indications on how to perform complex overlay operations of fuzzy maps provided. The model was illustrated through an example of representing multi-resolution, sub-pixel maps that are typically derived from remote sensing techniques. [Termes IGN] relation topologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Topological relationships between spatial objects such as overlap, disjoint, and inside have for a long time been a focus of research in a number of disciplines like cognitive science, robotics, linguistics, artificial intelligence, and spatial reasoning. In particular as predicates, they support the design of suitable query languages for spatial data retrieval and analysis in spatial database systems and Geographic Information Systems. While conceptual aspects of topological predicates (like their definition and reasoning with them) as well as strategies for avoiding unnecessary or repetitive predicate evaluations (like predicate migration and spatial index structures) have been emphasized, the development of correct and efficient implementation techniques for them has been rather neglected. Recently, the design of topological predicates for different combinations of complex spatial data types has led to a large increase of their numbers and accentuated the need for their efficient implementation. The goal of this article is to develop efficient implementation techniques of topological predicates for all combinations of the complex spatial data types point2D, line2D, and region2D, as they have been specified by different authors and in different commercial and public domain software packages. Our solution is a two-phase approach. In the exploration phase, for a given scene of two spatial objects, all topological events like intersection and meeting situations are recorded in two precisely defined topological feature vectors (one for each argument object of a topological predicate) whose specifications are characteristic and unique for each combination of spatial data types. These vectors serve as input for the evaluation phase which analyzes the topological events and determines the Boolean result of a topological predicate or the kind of topological predicate. This paper puts an emphasis on the exploration phase and the definition of the topological feature vectors. In addition, it presents a straightforward evaluation method. [Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (Auteur) Distances from points to closest shorelines in a given direction are used, for example, in some models for estimating wave exposure. Such distances, also called fetch lengths, can be determined using standard geographic information systems. However, performance may be a problem if these distances are required for a great number of study points. Two new algorithms for determining fetch lengths for study points in the same directions are presented in this paper. It is assumed that the two-dimensional map is stored in vector format, i.e. shorelines of islands and mainland are stored as polygons. The first algorithm works on a set of undirected line segments derived from the shoreline polygons. The other works on a raster representation of the map. The algorithm saves memory by postponing the rasterisation until necessary. Both of the new algorithms have superior efficiency to a previously reported algorithm when the number of study points is large. [Termes IGN] siteRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a new method to solve site selection problems using ant colony optimization (ACO) techniques. Optimal spatial search for siting public facilities is a common task for urban planning. The objective is to find N optimal sites (targets) for sitting a facility so that the total benefits are maximized or the total costs are minimized. It is straightforward to use the brute-force method for identifying the optimal solution by enumerating all possible combinations. However, the brute-force method has difficulty in solving complex spatial search problems because of a huge solution space. Ant colony optimization can provide a useful tool for site selection. In this study, the integration of ACO with geographic information systems is proposed to include various types of spatial variables in the optimization. A number of modifications have also been introduced so that ACO can fit spatial allocation problems. The novelty of this research includes the adoption of the strategies of neighborhood pheromone diffusion, tabu table adjusting, and multi-scale optimization. This method has been applied to the allocation of a hypothetical facility in Guangzhou City, China. The experiment indicates that the proposed model has better performance than the single search and the genetic algorithm for solving common site search problems. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) Hybrid digital terrain models combine terrain data with different topologies and resolutions. Cartographic digital terrain models are typically composed of regular grid data that can be locally refined by adding a Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) that represents morphologically complex terrain parts. Direct rendering of both datasets to visualize the digital terrain model generates discontinuities, as the meshes are disconnected. The utilization of complete/partial precomputed tessellation solutions solves the problem of quality, but limits the applicability of the representation to models with a fixed relative position between datasets. In this paper, we present a new scheme for hybrid terrain representation that permits the dynamic generation of the adaptive tessellation required to join the grid and TIN models. Our proposal permits the dynamic modification of the relative position between datasets. This increases the representation capabilities for those applications where this property is interesting as, for example, urban and landscape planning applications. The algorithm we propose is based on the identification of convex areas on the TIN and the efficient generation of triangles to join the models based on this convex structure. As a result, high quality models without discontinuities are obtained, increasing the flexibility of previous solutions based on fixed precomputations. [Termes IGN] salinitéRésumé : (Auteur) A GIS-based framework was developed to assess salinity risk at the sub-catchment level in the Condamine catchment, Australia. Spatial data were used to describe a range of landscape features and processes that influence the risk of salinity occurring. The data were compiled into three core components: biophysical hazard, current management influence and salinity stage. A salinity risk rating was developed for 43 individual surface hydrological sub-catchments within the Condamine catchment by combining the three component rankings in a structured rule framework. The underlying data, decision rules and all associated documents were packaged in an ArcGIS personal geodatabase for use by the client. This allowed the results to be viewed spatially and ensured that the risk assessment process was transparent to users. Increased analytical power has stimulated user demand for more detailed information for smaller geographical areas and customized boundaries. Consequently, it is vital that improved methods of statistical disclosure control are developed to protect against the increased disclosure risk. Traditionally methods of statistical disclosure control have been aspatial in nature. Here we present a geographically intelligent approach that takes into account the spatial distribution of risk. We describe empirical work illustrating how the flexibility of this new method, called local density swapping, is an improved alternative to random record swapping in terms of risk-utility. [Termes IGN] représentation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The basic idea of a cartogram is to distort a geographical map by substituting the geographic area of a region by some other variable of interest. The objective is to rescale each region according to the value of the variable of interest while keeping the map, as much as possible, recognizable. There are several algorithms for building cartograms. None of these methods has proved to be universally better than any other, since the trade-offs made to get the correct distortion vary. In this paper we present a new method for building cartograms, based on self-organizing neural networks (Kohonen's self-organizing maps or SOM). The proposed method is widely available and is easy to carry out, and yet has several appealing properties, such as easy parallelization, making up a good tool for geographic data presentation and analysis. We present a series of tests on different problems, comparing the new algorithm with existing ones. We conclude that it is competitive and, in some circumstances, can perform better then existing algorithms. [Termes IGN] tombeRésumé : (Auteur) Geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial regression modeling techniques were used to evaluate the spatially prioritized relationships between grave density and various spatial parameters for a total of 5549 grave locations. Solar radiation was the most important predictor of grave density in the Feng-Shui locations. Similarly, spatial clustering technology identified the fact that high concentrations of grave necessarily accompany the significantly increasing trends of solar radiation. The results of the regression analyses indicate that the grave density could be explained by the four landform parameters alone yielding R 2 values of 0.751. In contrast to the typical theory, slope and aspect were not a dominant determining factor upon the dependent variable of grave density. Also, the significantly increasing trends of grave density were not observed in line with a southern direction. A clear verification has been made for the hidden assumptions in Feng-Shui's long history that its approach is found to be more appropriate in avoiding shadow conditions, rather than exploring the ideal landform location. Since this type of problem is solved so frequently, it is important to craft an approach that is as efficient as possible. Based upon past research, it is generally accepted that several efficient implementations of the Dijkstra algorithm are the fastest at optimally solving the 'one-to-one' shortest path problem (Cherkassky et al. 1996). We show that the most efficient state-of-the-art implementations of Dijkstra can be improved by taking advantage of network properties associated with GIS-sourced data. The results of this paper, derived from tests of different algorithmic approaches on real road networks, will be extremely valuable for application developers and researchers in the GIS community. This study aims at building a statistical land conversion model to assist in understanding land use change patterns. Specifically, GIS coupled with a logistic regression model and exponential smoothing techniques is used for exploring the effects of various factors on land use change. These factors include population density, slope, proximity to roads, and surrounding land use, and their influence on land use change is studied for generating a predictive model. Methods to reduce spatial autocorrelation in a logistic regression framework are also discussed. Primarily, an optimal sampling scheme that can eliminate spatial autocorrelation while maintaining adequate samples to allow the model to achieve the comparable accuracy as the spatial autoregressive model is developed. Since many of the previous studies on modeling the spatial complexity of urban growth ignored temporal complexity, a modified exponential smoothing technique is employed to produce a smoothed model from a series of bi-temporal models obtained from different time periods. The proposed model is validated using the multi-temporal land use data in New Castle County, DE, USA. It is demonstrated that our approach provides an effective option for multi-temporal land use change modeling and the modeling results help interpret the land use change patterns.
