[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Urban form and function have been studied extensively in urban planning and geographical information science. However, gaining a greater understanding of how they merge to define the urban morphology remains a substantial scientific challenge. Toward this goal, this paper addresses the opportunities presented by the emergence of crowdsourced data to gain novel insights into form and function in urban spaces. We are focusing in particular on information harvested from social media and other open-source and volunteered datasets (e.g. trajectory and OpenStreetMap data). These data provide a first-hand account of form and function from the people who define urban space through their activities. This novel bottom-up approach to study these concepts complements traditional urban studies to provide a new lens for studying urban activity. By synthesizing recent advancements in the analysis of open-source data, we provide a new typology for characterizing the role of crowdsourcing in the study of urban morphology. We illustrate this new perspective by showing how social media, trajectory, and traffic data can be analyzed to capture the evolving nature of a city’s form and function. While these crowd contributions may be explicit or implicit in nature, they are giving rise to an emerging research agenda for monitoring, analyzing, and modeling form and function for urban design and analysis. [Termes IGN] squelettisationRésumé : (Auteur) Crowdsourcing geospatial data mainly collected by public citizens have brought about a profound transformation on data acquisition and utilization. However, the unpredictable positional accuracies, unstructured semantic descriptions, and invalid spatial relations occur to crowdsourcing geospatial data, causing difficulties for conflating heterogeneous data sets collected by different professional agencies or volunteers. We thus propose a novel pattern-mining approach to conflate crowdsourcing road networks with points of interest (POIs) geometrically and semantically. The proposed method mines the geometric patterns between road networks and POIs respectively and generates the pattern-related skeleton graphs for them. Then, corresponding points are determined between the two skeleton graphs to align POIs and road networks geometrically, and the road-related semantic data between the associated POIs and the road segments are compared to check the data quality of POIs and infer the road names of the road segments. Experimental results show the advantages of our proposed method, demonstrating a functional and promising solution for enriching POIs and road network geometrically and semantically. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) One solution to the integration of additional characteristics, e.g. time and scale, into geographic information system (GIS) datasets is to model them as extra geometric dimensions perpendicular to the spatial ones, creating a higher-dimensional model. Previous work has been mostly limited to higher-dimensional rasters and hierarchies of trees, which grow exponentially with the dimension. As representations with limited topological relationships quickly become intractable in higher dimensions, a topological vector approach seems most suitable for this purpose, requiring the use of higher-dimensional topological data structures. We therefore present in this paper an evaluation and classification of the possible data structures for an nD GIS, including how they can be implemented to support real-world data aspects, such as holes, disconnected components and attributes, as well as practical issues that affect their feasibility, like the availability of algorithms, libraries and software. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents an original methodology for the construction of a harmonized database for urban areas in the United States from 1790 to 2010 (a period with a census every 10 years, amounting to 23 dates). Upstream, this method is based on a theoretical choice, the use of a spatio-temporal reference frame to construct urban areas over the long term, defined by a maximum range of one hour’s travel for each period. We used an automatic aggregation from a Reilly model. Urban measures (growth, concentration) derived from this harmonized database are then presented, providing a unified picture of urbanization in the United States over more than two centuries. They are compared with results derived from more classical databases established using the official figures from the Census Bureau, or from other constructions differing from the present system. The results diverge considerably in some instances, which confirms the impact of the method of delineation of geographical areas in measures of growth.
