[Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) Some map users still experience difficulties when attempting to route plan, navigate and/or wayfind. This paper provides information on the outcomes of a research project that aims to identify the nature of the difficulties/challenges these users experience. The paper draws on findings from studies of strategies used by novice and experienced map users, and users with poor spatial abilities, to identify the skills that those with poor spatial abilities or with little map reading experience lack. Data were collected using Tobii Pro Glasses 2 hardware and associated software. Fourteen participants walked between two predetermined locations while wearing eye-tracking glasses and speaking their thoughts aloud. The data collected in this study were analysed using quantitative and qualitative approaches. Analysis of the results shows three key findings for this particular group: looking at the map incessantly led to missed environmental cues; street names were not labelled at decision-making points on the map; and some individuals having poor spatial abilities prefer small-scale landmarks, for example, buildings with numbers to locate themselves, as opposed to using road names or larger landmarks. We argue that by considering these findings, map designs could be adjusted to meet the needs of map users with poor spatial abilities. The graphical design of geospatial information does however conform to a consensus around the conceptual limits of that distortion, with an overall design framework that constrains the design to ensure comprehension and the effective recognition of geographic entities and relations. Although constraints are necessary, we argue that the advent of digital technology, particularly in mobile mapping, warrants re-examination of the parameters of these distortions. Here we introduce the concept of ‘the bounds of distortion’ as a device for considering the conceptual boundaries of map design, and as a foundation for further work to investigate how these bounds may be redefined to better support map users with more effective graphical information. The focus here is navigational information, and in particular urban navigation and interaction with the graphical representation of urban geography and public transport networks. These typographic attributes are itemized and characterized for encoding literal, categorical and quantitative data. Label-based thematic maps are shown, including examples that scale to multiple data attributes and a large number of entities. Multiple approaches to handle long labels are considered. Positional and proportional encoding apply attributes to portions of labels for encoding a large number of data attributes or quantitative values. Quantitative evaluation indicates label-based thematic maps may outperform choropleth maps for some tasks. Qualitative evaluation provides guidance for design considerations. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) In the field of fictional and literary geography, the spatial information is conveyed through the power of words by one person: the author of the novel or, in the case of Dream Cartography, by the dreamer. Every story takes place somewhere. However, the acquisition of geographic information differs conceptually from the geography of the real, physical world. This represents a novel opportunity for engaging in the production of volunteered geoinformation. With the right tools available, the collaborative spatialization of dreams gives birth to a new category of Volunteered Geographical Information (VGI), namely a fictional VGI. We argue that not only the dreamer, but also a third party may contribute to fictional geography by making a visual interpretation of the original content published by the dreamer. The social aspect of volunteering is discussed in both VGI and F-VGI. Additional possible sources of information, which may be used for retrieving geoinformation from dreams, are also mentioned. Our judgments are supported by data from an experimental study on dream locations. The participants rated their awareness of the dream setting, stated which elements are helping them to recognize places in their dreams and estimated the frequency of their dreams happening in personally relevant places. Some limitations were identified concerning the variables measured (accuracy and speed of answer) and the tasks to be performed by users. Results have shown that the two common metrics used in map evaluations seem not to be sufficient to reveal differences between map types. Other metrics extracted from the participants’ interaction logs have been used successfully. Finally, to decrease the variability between the results of experiments and to make them more comparable with previous tests, one solution might be to develop and share reference data sets and sets of tasks in several themes, with known cognitive complexities, as is already done in other research fields. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Among approaches for automated generalization of vector data, we focus on the multi-agent paradigm: cartographic objects are modeled as agents (autonomous objects) that apply generalization algorithms to themselves to satisfy cartographic constraints. Several agent levels are considered, for example, individual agents, such as a building, and agents representing a group of agents, such as an urban block composed of the surrounding roads and contained buildings. Several multi-agent models were proposed to automate the orchestration of map generalization processes. Existing multi-agent generalization models have different approaches to manage the relations between agent levels. In this paper, we unify existing models, adapting a multi-level simulation model, to simplify interactions between agents in different levels. We propose the DIOGEN model, in which the principle of interactions between agents of different levels is adapted to constraint-driven cartographic generalization. DIOGEN unifies three existing multi-agent generalization models (AGENT, CartACom and GAEL), combine their behaviors and take advantage of their skills. Our proposal is evaluated on different use cases: instances of topographic mapping, and mapping of hiking routes over topographic data as an example of thematic mapping. In the literature on real-time map generalisation, however, corresponding methods that resolve cartographic conflicts by deformation of the underlying map space together with the map foreground, are underrepresented. This paper demonstrates how the concept of a malleable space can be applied as a part of the generalisation process and incorporated into the overall methodology of point generalisation. Two different algorithms are used, a density-equalising cartogram algorithm and Laplacian smoothing. Both methods work in real-time and are datadriven. In addition, they allow for a parameterisation in combi-nation with a quadtree data structure, as well as a combination with 'classic' generalisation operators (e.g. selection, aggregation, displacement) based on the quadtree. The quadtree serves both as a spatial index for fast retrieval and search of points, and as a density estimator to inform generalisation operators. The use of the quadtree as a common spatial index provides a tool to combine variable-scale maps with classic generalisation. A combination of the two allows, at small map scales, the maintenance of detail in dense areas and data reduction in sparse areas. Additionally, it facilitates building a modular workflow for real-time map generalisation.
