We attempted to prepare a base map by detecting the edges of submerged paddy fields from a SPOT image with the use of multiresolution wavelet transform. The raw image of SPOT band 3 was decomposed into a low frequency approximation image and a set of high frequency detailed images to five levels, and then reconstructed. The reconstructed image at the fifth level was obtained from all of the high frequency images except for the low frequency approximation image. The image reconstructed up to full scale was then applied to a zero-crossing scheme and three post-processings-line thinning, removal of isolated pixels, and connection of pixels with their neighbours in order to obtain clear edges. The spatial features of the image indicating the edges obtained by multi-resolution wavelet transform were compared quantitatively with those obtained by using a difference of Gaussian (DOG) filter. The multi-resolution wavelet transform was better than the DOG filter in that the base map obtained by the wavelet transform method represented a 'field block', which is typically composed of 10 holdings of paddy field, more precisely than with the DOG filter, and in that the number of open polygons on this map was smaller, indicating that the wavelet transform method is more suitable for producing the base map in GIS for the management of paddy fields. Early stages of rice growth show peak larval production, but Landsat sensor data are often obstructed by clouds during the early part of the cropping cycle (rainy season). In this study, we examined whether a classification based on two Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM)+ scenes acquired in the middle of the season and at harvesting times could be used to map different land uses and rice planted at different times (cohorts), and to infer which rice growth stages were present earlier in the season. We performed a maximum likelihood supervised classification and evaluated the robustness of the classifications with the transformed divergence separability index, the kappa coefficient and confusion matrices. Rice was distinguished from other land uses with 98% accuracy and rice cohorts were discriminated with 84% accuracy (three classes) or 94% (two classes). Our study showed that optical remote sensing can reliably identify potential malaria mosquito breeding habitats from space. In the future, these 'crop landscape maps' could be used to investigate the relationship between cultivation practices and malaria transmission. [Termes IGN] rendement agricoleRésumé : (Auteur) This study demonstrates a unique matrix approach to determine within-field variability in wheat yields using fine spatial resolution 4 m IKONOS data. The matrix approach involves solving a system of simultaneous equations based on IKONOS data and post-harvest yields available at entire field scale. This approach was compared with a regression-based modelling approach involving field-sensor measured yields and the corresponding IKONOS measured indices and wavebands. The IKONOS data explained 74-78% variability in wheat yield. This is a significant result since the finer spatial resolution leads to capturing greater spatial variability and detail in landscape relative to coarser spatial resolution data. A pixel-by-pixel mapping of wheat yield variability highlights the fine spatial detail provided by IKONOS data for precision farming applications. [Termes IGN] risque naturelRésumé : (Auteur) Swelling soils are a major geological hazard worldwide and their identification is a major concern. Swelling is due to the presence of clay minerals with a potential to accommodate water within their crystal structure. Three common groups, namely smectite, illite and kaolinite, have been identified as indicators of high, moderate and low swelling potential soils where in abundance. This study assessed the potential of spectral data as a tool to recognize the presence of these minerals in soils of varying swelling potential collected from the Antequera area of southern Spain, with the aim of establishing spectral parameters that would in future be applied in remote sensing applications for mapping swelling soils. The coefficient of linear extensibility (COLE) and the linear extensibility (Lerod), which are established methods for assessing swelling potential and tentative clay mineral allocation, were used as the controlling methods to classify the soils into swelling potential groups and to assign them to dominant clay mineral types. Several spectral parameters were identified as giving a good basis for assigning the soils to domination by either of these clay minerals, and thus to a swelling potential class based on their diagnostic assignment to hydroxyl (OH) and molecular water vibrational processes in clay minerals. The parameters consisted of asymmetries (1400 nm and 2200 nm) that were strong in the presence of the more ordered kaolinite, wavelength position and depth at 1900 nm, in abundant smectites, first and second derivative peaks at or near the molecular water feature and the unique presence of absorptions at 2170 nm and 2340 nm in abundant kaolinite and illite. The results show the potential for using reflectance spectroscopy as a tool in the classification of soils into domination by these indicator minerals and thus into swelling potential classes. However, high organic matter and the presence of moisture were found to affect area and depth intensities and would require consideration in such applications. [Termes IGN] TRMMRésumé : (Auteur) Eight different fire datasets for Indonesia were compared with each other and to fine spatial resolution burnscar maps. Results show that each dataset detects different fires. More than two-thirds of the fires detected by one dataset are not detected by any other dataset. None of the datasets detect fires in all test areas. Fire regime, satellite sensor characteristics and fire detection algorithms all influence which fires are detected. Fire datasets were not complementing each other as they all had commission as well as omission errors. [Termes IGN] précision de la classificationRésumé : (Auteur) Conventional unsupervised classification algorithms that model the data in each class with a multivariate Gaussian distribution are often inappropriate, as this assumption is frequently not satisfied by the remote sensing data. In this Letter, a new algorithm based on independent component analysis (ICA) is presented. The ICA mixture model (ICAMM) algorithm that models class distributions as non-Gaussian densities has been employed for unsupervised classification of a test image from the AVIRIS sensor. A number of feature-extraction techniques have also been examined that serve as a preprocessing step to reduce the dimensionality of the hyperspectral data. The proposed ICAMM algorithm results in significant increase in the classification accuracy over that obtained from the conventional K-means algorithm for land cover classification.
