[Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (Auteur) In the autumn of 1914, Austria-Hungary began to prepare for the possibility of an Italian offensive by building field fortifications, which formed the Tyrol Defense Line (TDL). Mountainous areas, such as the area of the TDL, present obstacles to trafficability in large part caused by terrain slope. On the eastern Tyrol front, steep slope obstructed trafficability when the Italians attacked the TDL and represented, in turn, an advantage for the Austro-Hungarian defense. This paper focuses on the assessment of the conditions of trafficability determined by slope in the eastern Tyrol front, using a GIS cost distance analysis. Key sources were the maps of Austrian and Italian official histories, parameters derived mainly from Marinelli’s slope classification, and from the interpretation of the particular historical circumstances. The advantages and disadvantages were considered from the perspective of the defensive and offensive and their significance for the history of this conflict. In particular, these were related to the perimeter to be defended by alternative Austro-Hungarian lines. [Termes IGN] traitement de données localiséesRésumé : (Auteur) Conventional algorithms for polygon rasterization are typically designed to maintain non-topological characteristics. Consequently, topological relationships, such as the adjacency between polygons, may also be lost or altered, creating topological errors. This paper proposes a topology-preserving polygon rasterization algorithm to avoid topological errors. Four types of topological error may occur during polygon rasterization. The algorithm starts from an initial polygon rasterization and uses a set of preserving strategies to increase topological accuracy. The count of the four types of error measures the topological errors of the conversion. Topological accuracy is summarized as 1 minus the ratio of actual topological errors to the total number of possible error cases. When applied to a land-use dataset with a data volume of 128 MB, 127,836 polygons, and extending 1352 km2, the algorithm achieves a topological accuracy of more than 99% when raster cell size is 30 m or smaller (100% for 5 and 10 m). The effects of cell size, polygon shape, and number of iterations on topological accuracy are also examined. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Equivalence (the equal-area property of a map projection) is important to some categories of maps. However, unlike for conformal projections, completely general techniques have not been developed for creating new, computationally reasonable equal-area projections. The literature describes many specific equal-area projections and a few equal-area projections that are more or less configurable, but flexibility is still sparse. This work develops a tractable technique for generating a continuum of equal-area projections between two chosen equal-area projections. The technique gives map projection designers unlimited choice in tailoring the projection to the need. The technique is particularly suited to maps that dynamically adapt optimally to changing scale and region of interest, such as required for online maps. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Information on spatial distribution of buildings must be explored as part of the process of map generalization. A new approach is proposed in this article, which combines building classification and clustering to enable the detection of class differences within a pattern, as well as patterns within a class. To do this, an analysis of existing parameters describing building characteristics is performed via principal component analysis (PCA), and four major parameters (i.e. convex hull area, IPQ compactness, number of edges, and smallest minimum bounding rectangle orientation) are selected for further classification based on similarities between building characteristics. A building clustering method based on minimum spanning tree (MST) considering rivers and roads is then applied. Theory and experiments show that use of a relative neighbor graph (RNG) is more effective in detecting linear building patterns than either a nearest neighbor graph (NNG), an MST, or a Gabriel graph (GssG). Building classification and clustering are therefore conducted separately using experimental data extracted from OpenStreetMap (OSM), and linear patterns are then recognized within resultant clusters. Experimental results show that the approach proposed in this article is both reasonable and efficient for mining information on the spatial distribution of buildings for map generalization.
