[Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (auteur) Managing fire, water, biodiversity and carbon stocks can greatly benefit from early warning of changes in the state of vegetation. While near-real time tools to detect forest change based on satellite remote sensing exist, these ecosystems have relatively stable natural vegetation dynamics. Open (i.e. non-forest) ecosystems like grasslands, savannas and shrublands are more challenging as they show complex natural dynamics due to factors such as fire, postfire recovery, greater contribution of bare soil to observed vegetation indices, as well as high sensitivity to rainfall and strong seasonality. Tools to aid the management of open ecosystems are desperately required as they dominate much of the globe and harbour substantial biodiversity and carbon. We present an innovative approach that overcomes the difficulties posed by open ecosystems by using a spatio-temporal hierarchical Bayesian model that uses data on climate, topography, soils and fire history to generate ecological forecasts of the expected land surface signal under natural conditions. This allows us to monitor and detect abrupt or gradual changes in the state of an ecosystem in near-real time by identifying areas where the observed vegetation signal has deviated from the expected natural variation. We apply our approach to a case study from the hyperdiverse fire-dependent African shrubland, the fynbos of the Cape Floristic Region, a Global Biodiversity Hotspot and UNESCO World Heritage Site that faces a number of threats to vegetation health and ecosystem function. The case study demonstrates that our approach is useful for identifying a range of change agents such as fire, alien plant species invasions, drought, pathogen outbreaks and clearing of vegetation. We describe and provide our full workflow, including an interactive web application. [Termes IGN] TwitterRésumé : (auteur) Accurate and detailed geographical information digitizing human activity patterns plays an essential role in response to natural disasters. Volunteered geographical information, in particular OpenStreetMap (OSM), shows great potential in providing the knowledge of human settlements to support humanitarian aid, while the availability and quality of OSM remains a major concern. The majority of existing works in assessing OSM data quality focus on either extrinsic or intrinsic analysis, which is insufficient to fulfill the humanitarian mapping scenario to a certain degree. This paper aims to explore OSM missing built-up areas from an integrative perspective of social sensing and remote sensing. First, applying hierarchical DBSCAN clustering algorithm, the clusters of geo-tagged tweets are generated as proxies of human active regions. Then a deep learning based model fine-tuned on existing OSM data is proposed to further map the missing built-up areas. Hit by Cyclone Idai and Kenneth in 2019, the Republic of Mozambique is selected as the study area to evaluate the proposed method at a national scale. As a result, 13 OSM missing built-up areas are identified and mapped with an over 90% overall accuracy, being competitive compared to state-of-the-art products, which confirms the effectiveness of the proposed method. [Termes IGN] valeur aberranteRésumé : (auteur) Integration of aerial and ground images has been proved as an efficient approach to enhance the surface reconstruction in urban environments. However, as the first step, the feature point matching between aerial and ground images is remarkably difficult, due to the large differences in viewpoint and illumination conditions. Previous studies based on geometry-aware image rectification have alleviated this problem, but the performance and convenience of this strategy are still limited by several flaws, e.g. quadratic image pairs, segregated extraction of descriptors and occlusions. To address these problems, we propose a novel approach: leveraging photogrammetric mesh models for aerial-ground image matching. The methods have linear time complexity with regard to the number of images. It explicitly handles low overlap using multi-view images. The proposed methods can be directly injected into off-the-shelf structure-from-motion (SFM) and multi-view stereo (MVS) solutions. First, aerial and ground images are reconstructed separately and initially co-registered through weak georeferencing data. Second, aerial models are rendered to the initial ground views, in which color, depth and normal images are obtained. Then, feature matching between synthesized and ground images are conducted through descriptor searching and geometry-constrained outlier removal. Finally, oriented 3D patches are formulated using the synthesized depth and normal images and the correspondences are propagated to the aerial views through patch-based matching. Experimental evaluations using five datasets reveal satisfactory performance of the proposed methods in aerial-ground image matching, which succeeds in all of the ten challenging pairs compared to only three for the second best. In addition, incorporation of existing SFM and MVS solutions enables more complete reconstruction results, with better internal stability. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (auteur) Invasive alien plants (IAPs) threaten biodiversity and critical ecosystem services worldwide. There is, therefore, an urgent need to develop intervention measures to control the spread of IAPs. Efforts to control and monitor the spread of IAPs would require their current and detailed distribution over a large geographic area. Recently launched multispectral instrument on-board Sentinel-2 provides free data with good spatiotemporal and spectral resolution, compared to Landsat datasets. The Sentinel-2 dataset, therefore, can be a useful source of the IAPs spatial information required for detection and monitoring purposes. We combined Sentinel-2 data with a radiative transfer model to discriminate IAPs (Acacia mearnsii and Acacia dealbata) from surrounding native tree species in Van Reenen, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The forward mode of combined PROSPECT leaf optical properties model and SAIL canopy bidirectional reflectance model, also referred to as PROSAIL was used to simulate reflectance corresponding to bands of Sentinel-MSI, while the PROSAIL model inversion retrieved leaf area index (LAI) and canopy chlorophyll contents (CCC) of the IAPs and native species. Both reflectance and retrieved properties were used to map the distribution of the species within the study area. Our results showed that A. mearnsii and A. dealbata could be accurately discriminated from the surrounding native trees using integrated PROSAIL Sentinel-2 based model. We found that CCC– and LAI-based (% accuracy = 92.8%, 91.4% for CCC and LAI, respectively) modelling produced a higher classification accuracy than field sampling-based modelling (Accuracy = 90.2% (IAP), 82.2% (NAT) and kappa coefficient = 0.84 (IAP), 0.78 (NAT)). Simulated bands corresponding to Sentinel-2 data, on the other hand, produced species maps comparable to field sampling-based maps. Overall, the integrated PROSAIL Sentinel-2 inversion approach proved suitable for detecting and mapping IAPs over a large area. Due to the high spatiotemporal coverage of Sentinel-2, satellite images, the model developed showed the potential to contribute to the IAPs monitoring systems. [Termes IGN] surveillance du littoralRésumé : (auteur) Advancement in Remote Sensing allows rapid mangrove mapping without the need for data-intensive methodologies, complex classifiers, and skill-dependent classification techniques. This study proposes a new index, the Mangrove Vegetation Index (MVI), to rapidly and accurately map mangroves extent from remotely-sensed imageries. The MVI utilizes three Sentinel-2 bands green, Near Infrared (NIR) and Shortwave Infrared (SWIR) in the form |NIR-Green|/|SWIR-Green| to discriminate the distinct greenness and moisture of mangroves from terrestrial vegetation and other land cover. Spectral band analysis shows that the |NIR-Green| part of MVI captures the differences of greenness between mangrove forests and terrestrial vegetation. The |SWIR-Green| part of the index expresses the distinct moisture of mangroves without the need for additional intertidal data and water indices. The MVI value increases with the increasing probability of a pixel being classified as mangroves. Eleven mangrove forests in the Philippines and one mangrove park in Japan were then mapped using MVI. Accuracy assessment was done using field inventory data and high-resolution drone orthophotos. MVI have successfully separated the mangroves from other cover especially terrestrial vegetation, with an overall index accuracy of 92%. The MVI was applied to Landsat 8 images using the equivalent bands to test the universality of the index. Comparable MVI mangrove maps were produced between Sentinel-2 and Landsat images, with an optimal minimum threshold of 4.5 and 4.6, respectively. MVI can effectively highlight the greenness and moisture information in mangroves as reflected by its moderate to high correlation value (r = 0.63 and 0.84, α = 0.05) with the Sentinel-derived chlorophyll-a (Ca) and canopy water (Cw) biophysical products. This study developed and implemented two automated platforms: an offline IDL-based ‘MVI Mapper’ and an online Google Earth Engine-based MVI mapping interface. The MVI implemented in Google Earth Engine was used in generating the latest mangrove extent map of the Philippines. Additionally, the application of MVI were tested to four additional mangrove forests in Southeast Asia: Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Cambodia; and to selected mangroves forests in South America, Africa and Australia. [Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) This paper presents an approach for Structure from Motion (SfM) for unorganized complex image sets. To achieve high accuracy and robustness, image triplets are employed and an (approximate) internal camera calibration is assumed to be known. The complexity of an image set is determined by the camera configurations which may include wide as well as weak baselines. Wide baselines occur for instance when terrestrial images and images from small Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) are combined. The resulting large (geometric/radiometric) distortions between images make image matching difficult possibly leading to an incomplete result. Weak baselines mean an insufficient distance between cameras compared to the distance of the observed scene and give rise to critical camera configurations. Inappropriate handling of such configurations may lead to various problems in triangulation-based SfM up to total failure. The focus of our approach lies on a complete linking of images even in case of wide or weak baselines. We do not rely on any additional information such as camera configurations, Global Positioning System (GPS) or an Inertial Navigation System (INS). As basis for generating suitable triplets to link the images, an iterative graph-based method is employed formulating image linking as the search for a terminal Steiner minimum tree in the line graph. SIFT (Lowe, 2004) descriptors are embedded into Hamming space for fast image similarity ranking. This is employed to limit the number of pairs to be geometrically verified by a computationally and more complex wide baseline matching method (Mayer et al., 2012). Critical camera configurations which are not suitable for geometric verification are detected by means of classification (Michelini and Mayer, 2019). Additionally, we propose a graph-based approach for the optimization of the hierarchical merging of triplets to efficiently generate larger image subsets. By this means, a complete, 3D reconstruction of the scene is obtained. Experiments demonstrate that the approach is able to produce reliable orientation for large image sets comprising wide as well as weak baseline configurations. [Termes IGN] surface cultivéeRésumé : (auteur) It is critical to inventory abandoned farmland soon after it is generated, to better manage agricultural resources and to prevent negative consequences that would otherwise follow. This study aims to distinguish abandoned farmlands from active croplands—rice paddy and agricultural fields—by discerning the phenological trajectories over a short-term period of three years (Jan. 2016 to Dec. 2018) in Gwanyang City in South Korea. For Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification, we fully utilized parameters derived from harmonic analyses of the three vegetation indices (VIs: NDVI, NDWI, and SAVI) extracted from Sentinel-2A imagery. The harmonic analyses proved that higher-order sinusoid components produced better fitting to explain the trajectory of the VIs—the maximum adjusted was 95.23%—and the multiple VIs diversified the attributes for the classifications. Consequently, the higher-order harmonic components and the additional VIs increased the accuracy when used in SVM classification. The best performing classification was achieved with a composite of harmonic terms derived from the three VIs, yielding overall accuracy of 90.72%, Kappa index of 0.858, and user’s accuracy for abandoned farmland of 93.40%. The proposed method here would greatly improve the process of detecting abandoned farmland, despite a relatively short observation period, and enable a rapid response to the occurrence of abandonment.
