The first maps on the Internet for mass use appeared in the late 1990s. In the beginning, they were simple and modest. Computer development was also reflected in the development of digital cartography, and maps become interactive with users. Technology has made collecting spatial data easier and cheaper, and cartography has become available to ordinary users through various tools and services. Accordingly, emerging concepts and terms related to digital cartography are sometimes identical or match part of their domain of meaning. This article offers a review and analysis of keywords pertaining to digital cartography on the Internet. Different indicators are used to show trends in selected keywords’ appearance and, thus, trends in cartography. In this article, our goal is to assess potential map resources to explore riverscape changes at a regional network scale and to define key issues in using an automated vectorization protocol to characterize such changes on such a large scale. We consider IGN’s Nouvelle Carte de France a potentially good resource for our objective of two-date (oldest + actual vector database) comparisons on 1:20,000–1:25,000 scale maps, notably when applied at a regional scale. The French IGN corpus is a good example of topographic maps that were produced in the twentieth century in Europe with fairly homogeneous data over a whole national territory. Moreover, the digitization and georeferencing processes applied by IGN are very accurate. The evolution of conventional features is not as significant for the hydrographic theme and should not be a problem for automatic vectorization. The potential temporal coverage is from 1922 to 1993, but the complexity of the sheet divisions, partial revisions, and the heterogeneity of coverage over time prevent multidate analysis. I discuss challenges and unforeseen insights of GIS implementation within an advocacy NGO that supports community claims in an informal settlement of Cape Town’s metropolitan area. Through the lens of empirical data, limitations of the GIS implementation models framework are highlighted. GIS implementation will appear to be “acupunctural” and highly strategic and will unveil the use of GIS-based solutions as relational leverage. Finally, I discuss directions for further scientific research on GIS implementation within NGOs and community-based organizations.
