[Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) Tropical leaf phenology—particularly its variability at the tree-crown scale—dominates the seasonality of carbon and water fluxes. However, given enormous species diversity, accurate means of monitoring leaf phenology in tropical forests is still lacking. Time series of the Green Chromatic Coordinate (GCC) metric derived from tower-based red–greenblue (RGB) phenocams have been widely used to monitor leaf phenology in temperate forests, but its application in the tropics remains problematic. To improve monitoring of tropical phenology, we explored the use of a deep learning model (i.e. superpixel-based Residual Networks 50, SP-ResNet50) to automatically differentiate leaves from non-leaves in phenocam images and to derive leaf fraction at the tree-crown scale. To evaluate our model, we used a year of data from six phenocams in two contrasting forests in Panama. We first built a comprehensive library of leaf and non-leaf pixels across various acquisition times, exposure conditions and specific phenocams. We then divided this library into training and testing components. We evaluated the model at three levels: 1) superpixel level with a testing set, 2) crown level by comparing the model-derived leaf fractions with those derived using image-specific supervised classification, and 3) temporally using all daily images to assess the diurnal stability of the model-derived leaf fraction. Finally, we compared the model-derived leaf fraction phenology with leaf phenology derived from GCC. Our results show that: 1) the SP-ResNet50 model accurately differentiates leaves from non-leaves (overall accuracy of 93%) and is robust across all three levels of evaluations; 2) the model accurately quantifies leaf fraction phenology across tree-crowns and forest ecosystems; and 3) the combined use of leaf fraction and GCC helps infer the timing of leaf emergence, maturation and senescence, critical information for modeling photosynthetic seasonality of tropical forests. Collectively, this study offers an improved means for automated tropical phenology monitoring using phenocams. [Termes IGN] temps instantanéRésumé : (auteur) This paper presents a feature descriptor using Histogram of Oriented Mosaic Gradient (HOMG) that extracts spatial-spectral features directly from mosaic spectral images. Spectral imaging utilizes unique spectral signatures to distinguish objects of interest in the scene more discriminatively. Snapshot spectral cameras equipped with spectral filter arrays (SFAs) capture spectral videos in real time, making it possible to detect/track fast moving targets based on spectral imaging. How to effectively extract the spatial-spectral feature directly from the mosaic spectral images acquired by snapshot spectral cameras is a core issue for detection/tracking. So far, there is a lack of comprehensive and in-depth research on this issue. To this end, this paper proposed a new spatial-spectral feature extractor for mosaic spectral images. The proposed scheme finds two forms of SFA neighborhood (SFAN) to construct a feature extractor suitable for any SFA structure. Exploiting the spatial-spectral correlation in two SFANs, we design six mosaic spatial-spectral gradient operators to compute spatial-spectral gradient maps (SGMs). HOMG descriptors are constructed using the magnitude and orientation of SGMs. The effectiveness and generalizability of the proposed method have been verified with object tracking experiments. Compared to the state-of-the-art feature descriptors, HOMG ranked first on two datasets captured with snapshot spectral camera with different SFAs, achieving a gain of 3.9% and 5.9% in average success rate over the second-ranked feature. [Termes IGN] voie ferréeRésumé : (auteur) Recent developments in the field of rail vehicles increased the demand for accurate and up-to-date 3D maps of rail track networks. Collision avoidance systems, semi-automated, or fully autonomous rail vehicles strongly benefit from such high quality maps. In this work, we present a fully automatic, photogrammetric method for the 3D reconstruction of rail track segments. More specifically, the center line of the rail track is reconstructed as a georeferenced and continuous 3D cubic spline. The main data inputs are collected while driving the rail vehicle along the segment: (a) images from a front-looking camera and (b) observations from a low-cost GNSS receiver. Optional data inputs can be used to increase the reconstruction accuracy, namely (c) an a priori rail track (e.g. from OpenStreetMap), (d) a digital height model (DHM), and (e) ground control points (GCPs). The rail track is estimated in post processing (offline) by a weighted least squares adjustment (LSA). The core of the LSA is the bundle adjustment of images. It is extended by additional geometric constraints which exploit the geometric relations between the rail track, the rail vehicle, and the camera trajectory. As a consequence, in contrast to many related methods, the rails need not to be visible in the images to map the rail track. We applied the method to reconstruct a 13 km long tram line in Vienna (Austria). We found that the local geometry of the track can be well reconstructed from the image sequence. However, if the low-cost GNSS receiver is used as single georeferencing source, the track shows a strong drift behavior. This drift can significantly be minimized over the entire track if the above mentioned optional data inputs are used.
