[Termes IGN] SRTMRésumé : (Auteur) For 11 days in february 2000, the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) successfully recorded by interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data of the entire land mass of the earth between 60° N and 57° S. The data acquired in C-and X-bands are processed into the first global elevation models (DEMs) at 1 arc sec resolution, by NASA-JPL and German aerospace center (DLR), respectively. From the perspective of the STRM-X system, we give in this paper an overview of the mission and the DEM production, as well as an evaluation of the DEM product quality. Special emphasis is on challenges and peculiarities of the processing that arose from the unique designn of the STRM system, which has been the first single-pass interferometer in space. Space-based technologies such as satellite positioning systems, satellite communications sytems and Earth observations systems have the potential to fill many of these needs. MacDonald Dettwiler's Real-time Emergency Management via Satellite (REMSAT) system addresses this gap by providing an integrated system that has now been used operationally in a forest fire fighting role over the past 2 years. This paper will provide the concept of operations, an overview of the initial REMSAT system, and the results of the field tests including recommandations for future systems. [Termes IGN] sécheresseRésumé : (Auteur) The extend drought situation in the southeast of Buenos Aires during the second half of the year 2000 caused the government to invoke emergency laws. This action allowed farmers in the area to receive waivers for taxes and loans. The emergency laws remained in force during 2001, without further verification of environmental conditions for agriculture. Developing an assessment of the actual drought situation was relevant for taxing and national credit situations.
An assessment was preformed of the actual drought situaton of farms during the spring of 2001 in seven counties in Buenos Aires Province area. The assessment was done by comparing vegetation index values (NDVI) - as measured from NOAA-AVHRR satellite data - of September 2001 against NDVI time series values from previous years. Five categories were established to describe the relationship between the present index and the average of the time series. Farms within the area covered by the study were assigned to appropriate category using GIS tools. It was confirmed that most of the area had NDVI values that were similar to the average values, or even higher. It was found that there were subareas where the vegetation index had decreased. For those cases, LANDSAT TM images of the area of september and Octobr of 2001 were used for a detailed inspection. The study included rainfall data as well, confirming a normal regional situation. Both low and high resolution satellite images were found to be usefull tools for obtaining fast, economic, objective and conclusive results about the production capability of individual farms as well as the region as a whole. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Landsat TM and ETM data were used to create forest/non-forest maps with spatial patterns of forest fragmentation created by road building, agricultural colonisation and hydrocarbon exploration in Chapare (Bolivia) since the 1980s were analysed. Different spatial patterns of forest fragmentation were identified and analysed using landscape ecology metrics. These patterns are function of their deforestation histories which, in turn, can be explained by variety of Bolivian government policies. The relationships between landscape metrics and different simulated spatial resolutions of image data (from 30 to 1100) biodiversity conservation in humid tropical lowlands are considered.
