[Termes IGN] télémétrie laser sur satelliteRésumé : (Auteur) Tracking of animals has been an essential component of human development. [...] However, tracking and hunting of animals is probably best epitomised by the fur trackers and hunters of northern America and in particular the exploits of the Hudson Bay Company. Such field craft has grown from a trapper's art into a biologist's science that has been enhanced by the advent of the most recent technology. [Termes IGN] transport fluvialRésumé : (Auteur) In 1999, NATO aircraft destroyed three bridges across the Danube River at the city of Novi Sad in Serbia. Remaining submerged debris and unexploded ordnances (UX0s) posed such serious hazards to river traffic that only the smallest ships could squeeze through a temporary channel for nearly four years. In 2002, PMC Engineering of Belgrade integrated real-time kinematic (RTK) Global Positioning System (GPS) technology with underwater sonar and magnetometer devices to map the riverbed and locate the submerged UX0s. Six live shells were removed during cleanup, and river traffic is now gradually returning to its pre-war levels. [Termes IGN] station de référenceRésumé : (Auteur) The European Terrestrial Reference System 89 (ETRS89) is used as the standard precise GPS coordinate system throughout Europe. Supported by EuroGeographics, this reference system forms the backbone for all geographic and geodynamic projects on the European territory both on a national as on an international level. The ETRS89 is materialized through the science-driven EUREF Permanent Network, a network of continuously operating GPS reference stations distributed over the European territory and completely based on voluntary contributions. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Cartographic generalisation deals with the correct symbolisation and the placement of the cartographic objects and the labels on the map. This lengthy task has to balance many visually conflicting objectives and has historically been performed by the trained, artistic, and to some degree subjective eye of Cartographers. The automation of this process has tong been regarded as the “Holy Grail” of cartography by academics, mapping agencies and software providers alike. [Termes IGN] transformation en cosinus discrèteRésumé : (Auteur) This is the first of two articles which will describe the JPEG2000 ISO standard and its use and benefits for GI applications. This article covers JPEG2000/part1 image compression which can be efficiently used for orthophotos. A wide range of techniques currently exist for the compression of images (grayscale or color). One of the most common techniques is the DCT-based "JPEG-standard" from the Joint Pictures Expert Group. Simply, JPEG takes 8x8 pixel blocks and compresses those using DCT. However, JPEG is over 15 years old and therefore JPEG2000 which is described here is the official successor.
