[Termes IGN] thermographieRésumé : (Auteur) Many previous studies have demonstrated the viability of estimating advective ocean surface currents from sequential infrared satellite imagery using the maximum cross-correlation (MCC) technique when applied to 1.1-km-resolution Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) thermal infrared imagery. Applied only to infrared imagery, cloud cover and undesirable viewing conditions (gaps in satellite data and edge-of-scan distortions) limit the spatial and temporal coverage of the resulting velocity fields. In addition, MCC currents are limited to those represented by the displacements of thermal surface patterns, and hence, isothermal flow is not detected by the MCC method. The possibility of supplementing MCC currents derived from thermal AVHRR imagery was examined, with currents calculated from 1.1-km-resolution Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) ocean color imagery, which often have spatial patterns complementary to the thermal infrared patterns. Statistical comparisons are carried out between yearlong collections of thermal and ocean color derived MCC velocities for the central California Current. It is found that the image surface patterns and resulting MCC velocities complement one another to reduce the effects of poor viewing conditions and isothermal flow. The two velocity products are found to agree quite well with a mean correlation of 0.74, a mean rms difference of 7.4 cm/s, and a mean bias less than 2 cm/s which is considerably smaller than the established absolute error of the MCC method. Merging the thermal and ocean color MCC velocity fields increases the spatial coverage by approximately 25% for this specific case study. The difference between a glint-contaminated pixel and a nearby nonglint pixel from a spectral image prior to atmospheric correction yields a direct estimate of the spectral transmission of solar radiance which can then be used both to confirm atmospheric models and to retrieve an estimate of remote sensing reflectance. [Termes IGN] tâche image d'un pointRésumé : (Auteur) Efficient and accurate imaging spectroscopy data processing asks for perfectly consistent (i.e., ideally uniform) data in both the spectral and spatial dimensions. However, real pushbroom-type imaging spectrometers are affected by various point spread function (PSF) nonuniformity artifacts. First, individual pixels or lines may be missing in the raw data due to bad pixels originating from the detector, readout errors, or even electronic failures. Second, so-called smile and keystone optical aberrations are inherent to imaging spectrometers. Appropriate resampling strategies are required for the preprocessing of such data if emphasis is put on spatial PSF uniformity. So far, nearest neighbour interpolations have been often recommended and used for resampling. This paper shall analyze the radiometric effects if linear interpolation is used to optimize the spatial PSF uniformity. For modeling interpolation effects, an extensive library of measured surface reflectance spectra as well as real imaging spectroscopy data over various land cover types are used. The real measurements are systematically replaced by interpolated values, and the deviation between original and resampled spectra is taken as a quality measure. The effects of nearest neighbour resampling and linear interpolation methods are compared. It is found that linear interpolation methods lead to average radiometric errors below 2% for the correction of spatial PSF nonuniformity in the subpixel domain, whereas the replacement of missing pixels leads to average errors in the range of 10%-20%. [Termes IGN] précision de la classificationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a procedure to extract spectral channels of variable bandwidths and spectral positions from the hyperspectral image in such a way as to optimize the accuracy for a specific classification problem. In particular, each spectral channel ("s-band") is obtained by averaging a group of contiguous channels of the hyperspectral image ("h-bands"). Therefore, if one wants to define m s-bands, the problem can be formulated as the optimization of the related m starting and m ending h-bands. Toward this end, we propose to adopt, as an optimization criterion, an interclass distance computed on a training set and to generate a sequence of possible solutions by one of three possible search strategies. As the proposed formalization of the problem makes it analogous to a feature-selection problem, the proposed three strategies have been derived by modifying three feature-selection strategies, namely: 1) the "sequential forward selection", 2) the "steepest ascent," and 3) the "fast constrained search". Experimental results on a well-known hyperspectral data set confirm the effectiveness of the approach, which yields better results than other widely used methods. The importance of this kind of procedure lies in feature reduction for hyperspectral image classification or in the case-based design of the spectral bands of a programmable sensor. It represents a special case of feature extraction that is expected to be more powerful than feature selection. The kind of transformation used allows the interpretability of the new features (i.e., the spectral bands) to be saved.
