Three algorithms, one for the detection and tracking of convective cloud cells and another two for rainfall estimation, are applied on satellite sensor data in order to qualitatively and quantitatively verify the precipitation forecasts provided by a NWP model. The application of the detection and tracking algorithm aims at verifying qualitatively, in real time, the precipitation forecasts by monitoring the detected convective cloud cells, at the same time intervals that the model forecasts are given. The application of the rainfall estimation techniques on satellite sensor data is needed for both quantitative and qualitative crosscomparisons with the model outputs. The developed tool is applied in a case of intense precipitation over Greece. The results of the application are promising and show the potential for the implementation of the integrated system as a support tool for nowcasting and very short range forecasting by performing realtime validation of NWP precipitation forecasts. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (Auteur) Soil colour carries important information regarding the soil's chemical and physical properties. However, common practices for measuring soil colour, either by Munsell charts or by field/laboratory spectrometers, are insufficient, due to the subjective and nonquantitative character of the Munsell charts, and to the high cost and inconvenience of field spectrometers. We present herein, a method to characterize the colour of soil samples, and related chemical and physical properties of the soil, using a digital camera, and an array of coloured plastic chips, that are used for calibration purposes. Using 370 samples of sandy soils, we have demonstrated that both RGB values from digital images and their derived soil indices, correlate highly with similar measurements performed by a field spectrometer. When checked against free iron oxide content and against the percentage of fine particles in a subsample set of 42 soils, the redness index as measured by the digital camera gave similar or better correlations than those obtained from a field spectrometer, against both free iron oxides and fine particle contents (R2 of 89% for the iron oxides, and of for the fine particles). We propose the use of a digital camera as a field analytical tool to determine precisely: soil colour, iron oxide and fine particle content. Further study in this direction, with other soil population and more soil properties, is strongly advised in order to launch this as a vastly applicable and generic method. By these new high resolution satellite data, remote sensing technologies can be successfully applied to more application areas such as extracting road network from high resolution satellite images. This paper proposes a newly developed approach to extract a road network from high resolution satellite images. The approach is based on the binary and greyscale mathematical morphology and a line segment match method. First, the outline of road network is detected based on the grey morphological characteristics. Then, the basic road network is detected by the line segment match method. Next, the detected basic road network is processed based on the knowledge about the roads and binary mathematical morphological methods. Finally, visual analysis and three indicators are used to evaluate the accuracy of the extracted road networks. The results of the accuracy evaluation demonstrate that the developed road network extraction approach can provide both good visual effect and high positional accuracy. [Termes IGN] pixelRésumé : (Auteur) In the remote sensing literature, a number of indices have been proposed for quantifying the uncertainty in categorical labelling of fuzzy thematic map locations. Most of these measures derive their conceptual basis from Shannon's entropy. Nonetheless, the Shannon entropy implies a probabilistic interpretation of class membership values, such that their application is appropriate only for fuzzy thematic maps obtained by softening the output of a maximum likelihood classification. There is therefore a need to derive measures of classification uncertainty for raster thematic maps obtained from nonprobabilistic soft classifiers. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a family of measures that are based on the notion of nonspecificity for quantifying the pixellevel categorical uncertainty associated to nonprobabilistic fuzzy classifications of remotely sensed images.
