[Termes IGN] zone arideRésumé : (auteur) Water is a key natural resource on earth, especially in arid and semi-arid regions with limited rainfall amounts. The impact of drought could be alleviated via constructing dams to ensure water storage and supply. The aim of the present study is to detect proper sites for planning rainwater harvesting (RWH) in the western desert of Iraq using both the Boolean overlay and the weighted linear combination (WLC) in the geographic information system (GIS). Potential sites of rainwater harvesting were identified using multi-criteria evaluation. Several criteria were used, including physical characteristics and climatological and socio-economic conditions to determine the proper location for RWH. Seven WLC parameters were used in the site selection process: runoff, slope, soil texture, land use/land cover (LULC), distance from irrigated lands, distance from residential areas, and distance from roads, while the Boolean overlay method used the stream order and distance from faults parameters. The results indicated that the final map can be classified into three classes of suitability, i.e., (i) highly suitable with 6% coverage (117 km2), (ii) moderately suitable with 4% coverage (78 km2), and (iii) least suitable with 90% coverage (1758 km2) of the basin area. It was indicated that only three earthen dams could be executed along streams. This low data-intensive and cost-effective methodology offered can be adopted in arid regions to embrace RWH as an efficient strategy to handle growing water scarcity. The proposed method could be adopted in many countries that have identical environmental and physical conditions to the western desert of Iraq, which is the case in most arid regions. [Termes IGN] Toscane (Italie)Résumé : (auteur) This paper presents a spatial-based decision support system (DSS) to assist public and private forest managers in the analysis of potential feasibility in payments for forest ecosystem services (PES) for the prevention of soil erosion. The model quantifies the maximum willingness to pay (WTP) of managers of a reservoir to prevent soil loss. The minimum willingness to accept (WTA) of forest owners for the activation of a private market is also computed. The comparison of WTP and WTA identifies the forest area where PES are ideally feasible with additional potential for compensation to enable the schemes. The DSS highlights forest idiosyncrasies as well as local socio-economic and geomorphological characteristics influencing PES suitability at a geographic level. The potential applications and future improvements of the model are also discussed. [Termes IGN] réseau neuronal profondRésumé : (Auteur) Conventional simulations on multi-exit indoor evacuation focus primarily on how to determine a reasonable exit based on numerous factors in a changing environment. Results commonly include some congested and other under-utilized exits, especially with large numbers of pedestrians. We propose a multi-exit evacuation simulation based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL), referred to as the MultiExit-DRL, which involves a deep neural network (DNN) framework to facilitate state-to-action mapping. The DNN framework applies Rainbow Deep Q-Network (DQN), a DRL algorithm that integrates several advanced DQN methods, to improve data utilization and algorithm stability and further divides the action space into eight isometric directions for possible pedestrian choices. We compare MultiExit-DRL with two conventional multi-exit evacuation simulation models in three separate scenarios: varying pedestrian distribution ratios; varying exit width ratios; and varying open schedules for an exit. The results show that MultiExit-DRL presents great learning efficiency while reducing the total number of evacuation frames in all designed experiments. In addition, the integration of DRL allows pedestrians to explore other potential exits and helps determine optimal directions, leading to a high efficiency of exit utilization. [Termes IGN] transport publicRésumé : (auteur) Light rail transit (LRT), an essential urban public transport system in China, significantly reshaped the urban land-use (LU) pattern. Although the LRT impact and land-use change (LUC) analysis plays an essential role in urban planning policy, the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of LRT impacts have not been considered in LUC simulation studies. This study simulates the urban LU change, considering the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of LRT construction impacts on urban LUC. LUC from 1995 to 2005 in Nanjing, China, is chosen as a case study. At first, the distance decay function is employed to verify the quantitative impact of LRT construction on LU change. Accordingly, the variation trends of each LU type during different stages are described in time and space. A cellular automata model incorporated by the generated LRT impact is established and then implemented for simulation. According to model performance assessment results, the proposed model can produce a realistic urban pattern with Freedom of Movement (FoM) exceeding 24% and a significantly lower relative error than the CA simulation without considering LRT influence. Improved understanding of human interactions in spatial, temporal, and social dimensions are highly beneficial for research and practices in public health, urban planning, and other fields. Traditional methods of collecting social interaction data are time-intensive and resource-consuming, resulting in relatively small sample sizes and limited information. Furthermore, traditional methods often oversimplify the dynamics of human interactions and fail to capture the characteristics of places where the interactions occur. With the popularity of location-based social media (LBSM) platforms, people can publish information about their social events such as time, location, and other participants. This research introduces a framework that formalizes terminologies and concepts related to spatial-social connections for the construction of spatial-social networks from LBSM data in GIS. Supported by the framework, the study presents methods of collecting, analyzing, and visualizing LBSM data in spatial-social dimensions. The methods are implemented and tested in a case study with Facebook data. The case study demonstrates that location-based social media data can be transformed into spatial-social networks and then be analyzed and visualized to answer innovative types of scientific inquiries.
