[Termes IGN] Wuhan (Chine)Résumé : (auteur) This paper provides a study of the changes in land use in urban environments in two cities, Wuhan, China and western Sydney in Australia. Since mixed pixels are a characteristic of medium resolution images such as Landsat, when used for the classification of urban areas, due to changes in urban ground cover within a pixel, Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Analysis (MESMA) together with Super-Resolution Mapping (SRM) are employed to derive class fractions to generate classification maps at a higher spatial resolution using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) predicted Wavelet method. Landsat images over the two cities for a 30-year period, are classified in terms of vegetation, buildings, soil and water. The classifications are then processed using Indifrag software to assess the levels of fragmentation caused by changes in the areas of buildings, vegetation, water and soil over the 30 years. The extents of fragmentation of vegetation, buildings, water and soil for the two cities are compared, while the percentages of vegetation are compared with recommended percentages of green space for urban areas for the benefit of health and well-being of inhabitants. Changes in Ecosystem Service Values (ESVs) resulting from the urbanization have been assessed for Wuhan and Sydney. The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for urban areas are being assessed by researchers to better understand how to achieve the sustainability of cities. [Termes IGN] zone sinistréeRésumé : (Auteur) Accuracy assessment of burned area maps has been traditionally performed using pixel-based metrics, with the objective of assessing the accuracy and precision of burned area estimates at local and regional scales. While these assessments are helpful for obtaining consistent estimates of the burned area across many fires and over large areas, pixel-based approaches do not necessarily characterize how well individual fires are mapped. At the individual fire scale, other factors like the shape of the fire have significance regarding ecology, fire succession, and landscape management and determining other fire properties such as the spread rate. We propose a method for evaluating wildfire classification maps, which retains the spatially explicit properties of the burn scar. Our method quantifies the edge error (EE) of burned area classifications and reference maps by calculating the average geometric normal of the evaluated burned area boundary along the burn edge and the two nearest neighbor samples from the reference burn boundary. The metric is a physically meaningful quantification of the EE, which represents the average distance between the boundaries of the reference and evaluated burn scars. The methods are demonstrated by comparing MODIS Burned Area (MCD64A1) maps to Monitoring Trends in Burn Severity (MTBS) maps for 173 total wildfires in the United States. The results indicate that when accounting for the minimum achievable EE (MAEE) due to differing spatial resolutions, the mean EE is less than two MODIS pixels and the magnitude of the errors does not appear to be related to fire size. [Termes IGN] surveillance du littoralRésumé : (auteur) Salt marshes provide extensive ecosystem services, including high biodiversity, denitrification, and wave attenuation. In the mid-Atlantic, sea level rise is predicted to affect salt marsh ecosystems severely. This study mapped the entirety of Assateague Island with Very High Resolution satellite imagery and object-based methods to determine an accurate salt marsh baseline for change analysis. Topobathy-metric light detection and ranging was used to map the salt marsh and model expected tidal effects. The satellite imagery, collected in 2016 and classified at two hierarchical thematic schemes, were compared to determine appropriate thematic richness. Change analysis between this 2016 map and both a manually delineated 1962 salt marsh extent and image classification of the island from 1994 determined rates off change. The study found that from 1962 to 1994, salt marsh expanded by 4.01 ha/year, and from 1994 to 2016 salt marsh was lost at a rate of -3.4 ha/ year. The study found that salt marsh composition, (percent vegetated salt marsh) was significantly influenced by elevation, the length of mosquito ditches, and starting salt marsh composition. The study illustrates the importance of remote sensing monitoring for understanding site-specific changes to salt marsh environments and the barrier island system. [Termes IGN] températureRésumé : (auteur) Glacial melt water is the key source for various socio-industrial and domestic activities in the Himalayas. Several recent studies suggest that glaciers are experiencing rapid melt. The glaciers health can be best assessed by mass balance. However, the mass balance investigations using in-situ methods for a large sample of glaciers are highly difficult in the Himalaya. Hence, remote sensing methods and modelling techniques are preferred. However, there is a lack of information on uncertainties associated with these methods in assessing the regional scale mass balance. Hence, these methods are applied to evaluate the regional scale mass budget of Baspa basin, Western Himalaya between 2000 and 2011. The total mass loss estimated using geodetic method amounts to −0.49 ± 0.1 gigatons, temperature index method to −0.43 ± 0.012 gigatons and AAR method to −0.36 ± 0.1 gigatons. Furthermore, this study highlights the limitations of these methods in mass loss evaluation in data scarce Himalayan regions. Here, a two-phase sampling strategy for large-scale assessment of the total area and the total wood volume of fast-growing forest tree crops within agricultural land is presented. The first phase is performed using tessellation stratified sampling on high-resolution remotely sensed imagery and is sufficient for estimating the total area of plantations by means of a Monte Carlo integration estimator. The second phase is performed using stratified sampling of the plantations selected in the first phase and is aimed at estimating total wood volume by means of an approximation of the first-phase Horvitz-Thompson estimator. Vegetation indices from Sentinel-2 are exploited as freely available auxiliary information in a linear regression estimator to improve the design-based precision of the estimator based on the sole sample data. Estimators of the totals and of the design-based variances of total estimators are presented. A simulation study is developed in order to check the design-based performance of the two alternative estimators under several artificial distributions supposed for poplar plantations (random, clustered, spatially trended). An application in Northern Italy is also reported. The regression estimator turns out to be invariably better than that based on the sole sample information. Possible integrations of the proposed sampling scheme with conventional national forest inventories adopting tessellation stratified sampling in the first phase are discussed.
