[Termes IGN] vidéo numériqueRésumé : (Auteur) Passive microwave sensors have better capability of penetrating forest layers to obtain more information from forest canopy and ground surface. For forest management, it is useful to study passive microwave signals from forests. Passive microwave sensors can detect signals from needleleaf, broadleaf, and mixed forests. The observed brightness temperature of a mixed forest can be approximated by a linear combination of the needleleaf and broadleaf brightness temperatures weighted by their respective abundances. For a mixed forest observed by an N-band microwave radiometer with horizontal and vertical polarizations, there are 2 N observed brightness temperatures. It is desirable to infer 4 N + 2 unknowns: 2 N broadleaf brightness temperatures, 2 N needleleaf brightness temperatures, 1 broadleaf abundance, and 1 needleleaf abundance. This is a challenging underdetermined problem. In this paper, we devise a novel method that combines microwave unmixing with video segmentation for inferring broadleaf and needleleaf brightness temperatures and abundances from mixed forests. We propose an improved Otsu method for video segmentation to infer broadleaf and needleleaf abundances. The brightness temperatures of needleleaf and broadleaf trees can then be solved by the nonnegative least squares solution. For our mixed forest unmixing problem, it turns out that the ordinary least squares solution yields the desired positive brightness temperatures. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is able to unmix broadleaf and needleleaf brightness temperatures and abundances well. The absolute differences between the reconstructed and observed brightness temperatures of the mixed forest are well within 1 K. [Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate mapping of long-term global soil moisture is of great importance to earth science studies and a variety of applications. An approach for deriving volumetric soil moisture using satellite passive microwave radiometry from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) was developed in this study. Unlike the major AMSR-E retrieval algorithms that assume fixed scattering albedo values over the globe, the proposed algorithm adopts a weighted averaging strategy for soil moisture estimation based on a dynamic selection of albedo values that are empirically determined. The resulting soil moisture retrievals demonstrate more realistic global patterns and seasonal dynamics relative to the baseline University of Montana soil moisture product. Quantitative analysis of the new approach against in situ soil moisture measurements over four study regions also indicates improvements over the baseline algorithm, with coefficients of determination (R2) between the retrievals and in situ measurements increasing by approximately 16.9% and 41.5% and bias-corrected root-mean-square errors decreasing by about 25.0% and 38.2% for ascending and descending orbital data records, respectively. The resulting algorithm is readily applied to similar microwave sensors, including the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2, and its retrieval strategy is also applicable to other passive microwave sensors, including lower frequency (L-band) observations from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Soil Moisture Active Passive mission. [Termes IGN] SurinameRésumé : (auteur) Included in the larger Guiana Shield ecosystem, Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana and the Brazilian state of Amapá possess one of the largest continuous tracts of pristine forest in the world. Under little threat until fifteen years ago, deforestation and forest degradation are of increasing concern in the region. Gold mining activities driven by the sustained increase of gold price has experienced a significant boom and represents nowadays one of the main driver. The pollution of rivers and streams by mercury used in small-scale gold mining is also expanding, which increases risks to local population health and freshwater biodiversity. In 2010, the French National Forest Office (ONF) showed by using optical satellite images at medium and high resolution (HR) that gold mining activities’ impacts on forest cover and freshwater increased approximately by a factor three in the region between 2001 and 2008. More recently, Alvarez-Berríos et al. (2015) pointed out a sustained acceleration of deforestation caused by gold mining in the Guiana shield between 2007 and 2013. However, this study which was performed using low resolution data at the scale of South America has limited capacity to detect gold mining, especially in the high forest cover of Guiana Shield where small- and medium-scale operations account for most of the deforestation. To overcome this limitation, the REDD+ for the Guiana Shield project conducted a study co-funded by WWF Guianas to update for 2014 the ONF 2001-2008 results, using optical multi-sensors data at medium and high resolution. The study was carried out following a unique collaborative and participatory approach involving a team of experts from the forestry and environmental services of each territory, namely SEMA (Amapá-Brazil), ONF (French Guiana-France), GFC (Guyana), and SBB (Suriname). The results confirmed the rapid expansion of the activity in the region where more than 92,000 ha were newly deforested between 2008 and 2014, compared to approximately 46,000 ha during the period 2001-2008. In 2014, more than 9,000 km of waterways were in direct contact with mining sites, which is approximately 6.5 times more than in 2001. Although a reliable, accurate and robust regional methodology has been developed and operationally implemented, the frequent and widespread cloud cover of the Guianan moist forest region represents a challenge for the use of optical HR data. The need to process time series of satellite images in most areas to reduce cloud cover is time-consuming. Despite processing more than two hundreds images, 3.6% of the study area remained masked by clouds. The recent free access to SAR HR Sentinel-1 data offers great opportunities to improve the process. SAR sensors can peer through clouds and their sensitivity to soil moisture can help to better detect small-scale mining sites. Therefore, the REDD+ for the Guiana Shield project has started to build capacities in the region on SAR image interpretation and processing using the Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP). A first mosaic of Sentinel-1 data covering Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana and the Brazilian state of Amapá has been created and automated pre-processing steps have been developed. The integration of Sentinel-1 data in the regional gold mining monitoring system has been successfully tested in four study sites, one in each country. The coming free access to optical HR Sentinel-2 data opens even more perspectives towards the development of cost-effective monitoring systems in the region, especially valuable in the context of REDD+. This paper first presents the results of the impact of gold mining activities on the forest cover and freshwater for 2014 and shows the evolution since 2001. Secondly, it provides the first outcomes towards the development of time- and cost-efficient forest monitoring systems in the region. [Termes IGN] teneur en eau de la végétationRésumé : (auteur) Retrieval of vegetation parameters from remotely sensed data using a radiative transfer model is generally hampered by the ill-posed inverse problem, which dramatically decreases the precision level of retrieved parameters. The purpose of this study was to use a Bayesian network-based method to allow the alleviation of the ill-posed inverse problem. This was achieved by introducing the correlations between the model free parameters into their prior joint probability distribution (PJPD), allowing the reduction of the probabilities of unrealistic combinations. Three sampling strategies intended to design three types of PJPDs that considered different correlations (represented by a correlation matrix) were presented. They were multivariate uniform distribution composed by independent free parameters, multivariate uniform distribution based on a simple correlation matrix, and multivariate Gaussian distribution based on a complicated correlation matrix, respectively. A case study of the presented method to retrieve leaf area index (LAI) and canopy water content (CWC) using the PROSAIL_5B (PROSPECT-5 + 4SAIL) model from Landsat 8 products was implemented. Results indicate that the presented method greatly improves the precision level of target parameters, with the coefficient of determination R2 of 0.69, 0.77, and 0.82 and root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.55, 0.51, and 0.44 m2 · m-2 for LAI and R2 = 0.68, 0.78, and 0.84 and RMSE = 230, 198, and 166 g · m-2 for CWC, respectively. Hence, the ill-posed inverse problem can be alleviated by the presented method, which can be widely applied for vegetation parameters retrieval. The A.D. 2013 Mw 7.7 Balochistan (Pakistan) earthquake, dominated by left-lateral motion with some reverse component, ruptured a 200-km-long section of the Hoshab fault. We characterize the coseismic rupture in detail along its entire length. Optical and radar satellite images are combined to derive the full three-dimensional far-field displacement (115 m pixel size) and the high-resolution 2.5 m pixel horizontal displacement field resulting from the earthquake. We show that the vertical deformation is significant in several locations.
