[Termes IGN] valeur aberranteRésumé : (Auteur) Models of ground surface elevations are crucial to many applications of remotely sensed data, including estimates of the height relative to ground of non-ground objects, such as buildings and vegetation. In highly engineered regions, such as cities, there are many discontinuities in both the ground surface and the surface of non-ground objects. Sub-metre resolution elevation data for these regions are increasingly available. At these resolutions there is sufficient information and a growing need to improve model accuracies by incorporating discontinuities. Here we provide a new method for generating high resolution models of discontinuous ground surfaces from breakline data and digital surface models derived from remotely sensed data. The method uses segment based filtering, outlier removal and multiresolution thin-plate spline surface fitting. Breaklines are included in the fitted surface using partial derivatives and a breakline-aware method for transferring between different resolutions. We demonstrate our method using elevation data derived from photogrammetry for suburban regions of Perth, Western Australia, and Vaihingen, Germany. We produced ground surface models with noticeable qualitative and quantitative improvements when breaklines are included, at an increased computational cost of approximately 10% when all other parameters remained the same. For LiDAR derived elevations, we report our residual error against a number of other methods recorded using the ISPRS Ground Filtering Test Sites. [Termes IGN] scène 3DRésumé : (Auteur) Augmented reality (AR), the extension of the real physical world with holographic objects provides numerous ways to influence how people perceive and interact with geographic space. Such holographic elements may for example improve orientation, navigation, and the mental representations of space generated through interaction with the environment. As AR hardware is still in an early development stage, scientific investigations of the effects of holographic elements on spatial knowledge and perception are fundamental for the development of user-oriented AR applications. However, accurate and replicable positioning of holograms in real world space, a highly relevant precondition for standardized scientific experiments on spatial cognition, is still an issue to be resolved. In this paper, we specify technical causes for this limitation. Subsequently, we describe the development of a Unity-based AR interface capable of adding, selecting, placing and removing holograms. The capability to quickly reposition holograms compensates for the lack of hologram stability and enables the implementation of AR-based geospatial experiments and applications. To facilitate the implementation of other task-oriented AR interfaces, code examples are provided and commented. One of the largest issues associated with deep learning methods is the high quantity of data required for training. To help address this we present a method to improve public GIS building footprint labels by using Morphological Geodesic Active Contours (MorphGACs). We demonstrate by improving the quality of building footprint labels for detection and semantic segmentation, more robust and reliable models can be obtained. We evaluate these methods over a large UK-based dataset of 24556 images containing 169835 building instances. This is achieved by training several Mask/Faster R-CNN and RetinaNet deep convolutional neural networks. Networks are supplied with both RGB and fused RGB-lidar data. We offer quantitative analysis on the benefits of the inclusion of depth data for building segmentation. By employing both methods we achieve a detection accuracy of 0.92 (mAP@0.5) and segmentation f1 scores of 0.94 over a 4911 test images ranging from urban to rural scenes. [Termes IGN] volume en boisRésumé : (auteur) Field data in forest inventories are increasingly obtained using proximal sensing technologies, often under fixed-point sampling. Under fixed-point sampling some trees are not detected due to instrument bias and occlusions, hence involving an underestimation of the number of trees per hectare (N). The aim here is to evaluate various approaches to correct tree occlusions and instrument bias estimates calculated with data from ForeStereo (proximal sensor based on stereoscopic hemispherical images) under a fixed-point sampling strategy. Distance-sampling and the new hemispherical photogrammetric correction (HPC), which combines image segmentation-based correction for instrument bias with a novel approach for estimating the proportion of shadowed sampling area in stereoscopic hemispherical images, best estimated N and basal area (BA). Distance-sampling slightly overestimated N (11% bias, 0.60 Pearson coefficient with the reference measures) and BA (4%, 0.82). HPC provided less biased N estimates (-6%, 0.61) but underestimated BA (-8%, 0.83). HPC most accurately retrieved the diameter distribution.
