[Termes IGN] toitRésumé : (auteur) The reconstruction of urban areas suffers from the dilemma of modeling urban structures in a generic or specific way, thus being too unspecific or too restrictive. One approach to overcome this dilemma is to model and to instantiate buildings as arbitrarily shaped polyhedra and to recognize man-made structures in a subsequent stage by geometric reasoning. Thus, the existence of unconstrained boundary representations for buildings is assumed. To stay generic and to avoid the use of templates for pre-defined building primitives, no assumptions for the buildings' outlines and the planar roof areas are made. Typically, roof areas are derived interactively or in an automatic process based on given point clouds or digital surface models. Due to the measurement process and the assumption of planar boundaries, these planar faces are uncertain. Thus, a stochastic geometric reasoning process with statistical testing is appropriate to detected man-made structures followed by an adjustment to enforce the deduced geometric constraints. Unfortunately, city models usually do not feature information about the uncertainty of geometric entities. We present an approach to specify the uncertainty of the planes corresponding to the planar patches, i.e., polygons bounding a building, analytically. This paves the way to conduct the reasoning process with just a few assumptions. We describe and demonstrate the approach with real data. [Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (auteur) In this paper, we report a novel strategy for segmenting 3D point clouds using a voxel structure and graph-based clustering with perceptual grouping laws. It provides a completely automatic solution for partitioning point clouds of man-made infrastructure. Two different segmentation methods using voxel and supervoxel structures are presented and evaluated. To increase the efficiency and the robustness of the segmentation process, the voxelization with octree-based structure is introduced, which can suppress effects of noise, outliers, and unevenly distributed point densities as well. The clustering of over-segmented voxels and supervoxels is achieved using graph theory on the basis of the local contextual information, which is commonly conducted merely with pairwise information in conventional clustering algorithms. The graphical model is constructed according to perceptual grouping laws, considering geometric information associated with points. Experiments using both laser scanning and photogrammetric point clouds have demonstrated that the proposed methods can achieve good results, especially complex scenes and nonplanar object surfaces, with F1-measures better than 0.67 for all the testing samples. Quantitative comparisons between the proposed approaches and other representative segmentation methods also confirm the effectiveness and the efficiency of the former. Moreover, a series of experiments is carried out, to investigate the methods' sensitivity with respect to various parameters on the segmentation results. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (auteur) The representation of 3D geometric and photometric information of the real world is one of the most challenging and extensively studied research topics in the photogrammetry and robotics communities. In this paper, we present a fully automatic framework for 3D high quality large scale urban texture mapping using oriented images and LiDAR scans acquired by a terrestrial Mobile Mapping System (MMS). First, the acquired points and images are sliced into temporal chunks ensuring a reasonable size and time consistency between geometry (points) and photometry (images). Then, a simple, fast and scalable 3D surface reconstruction relying on the sensor space topology is performed on each chunk after an isotropic sampling of the point cloud obtained from the raw LiDAR scans. Finally, the algorithm proposed in (Waechter et al., 2014) is adapted to texture the reconstructed surface with the images acquired simultaneously, ensuring a high quality texture with no seams and global color adjustment. We evaluate our full pipeline on a dataset of 17 km of acquisition in Rouen, France resulting in nearly 2 billion points and 40000 full HD images. We are able to reconstruct and texture the whole acquisition in less than 30 computing hours, the entire process being highly parallel as each chunk can be processed independently in a separate thread or computer. [Termes IGN] programmation dynamiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This work addresses the generation of high quality digital surface models by fusing multiple depths maps calculated with the dense image matching method. The algorithm is adapted to very high resolution multi-view satellite images, and the main contributions of this work are in the multi-view fusion. The algorithm is insensitive to outliers, takes into account the matching quality indicators, handles non-correlated zones (e.g. occlusions), and is solved with a multi-directional dynamic programming approach. No geometric constraints (e.g. surface planarity) or auxiliary data in form of ground control points are required for its operation. Prior to the fusion procedures, the RPC geolocation parameters of all images are improved in a bundle block adjustment routine. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated on two VHR (Very High Resolution)-satellite image datasets (Pléiades, WorldView-3) revealing its good performance in reconstructing non-textured areas, repetitive patterns, and surface discontinuities. [Termes IGN] précision de localisationRésumé : (Auteur) The primary goal of the German TanDEM-X mission is the generation of a highly accurate and global Digital Elevation Model (DEM) with global accuracies of at least 10 m absolute height error (linear 90% error). The global TanDEM-X DEM acquired with single-pass SAR interferometry was finished in September 2016. This paper provides a unique accuracy assessment of the final TanDEM-X global DEM using two different GPS point reference data sets, which are distributed across all continents, to fully characterize the absolute height error. Firstly, the absolute vertical accuracy is examined by about three million globally distributed kinematic GPS (KGPS) points derived from 19 KGPS tracks covering a total length of about 66,000 km. Secondly, a comparison is performed with more than 23,000 “GPS on Bench Marks” (GPS-on-BM) points provided by the US National Geodetic Survey (NGS) scattered across 14 different land cover types of the US National Land Cover Data base (NLCD). Both GPS comparisons prove an absolute vertical mean error of TanDEM-X DEM smaller than ±0.20 m, a Root Means Square Error (RMSE) smaller than 1.4 m and an excellent absolute 90% linear height error below 2 m. The RMSE values are sensitive to land cover types. For low vegetation the RMSE is ±1.1 m, whereas it is slightly higher for developed areas (±1.4 m) and for forests (±1.8 m). This validation confirms an outstanding absolute height error at 90% confidence level of the global TanDEM-X DEM outperforming the requirement by a factor of five. Due to its extensive and globally distributed reference data sets, this study is of considerable interests for scientific and commercial applications.
