[Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (auteur) A new approach has been proposed for radar and optical image fusion. Candidate images for fusion are polarimetric radar images and very high resolution stereoscopic optical images. The fused product is expected to produce more reliable large scale land cover classifications. In the first part of this paper, observation-based state-of-the-art methods for optical and radar image fusion are discussed. The idea of unmixing physical radar scattering mechanisms with the optical images has been proposed as a suitable means to improve the resolution of the polarimetric radar images. The second part focuses on a general description of the target algorithm. The suggested physical approach simulating synthetic scattering matrices with stereoscopic optical images is developed. Finally, future work to develop this unmixing algorithm is discussed. This paper presents a three-step method for effective separation of buildings from trees using aerial imagery and lidar data. First, it uses cues such as height to remove objects of low height such as bushes, and width to exclude trees with small horizontal coverage. The height threshold is also used to generate a ground mask where buildings are found to be more separable than in so-called normalized DSM. Second, image entropy and color information are jointly applied to remove easily distinguishable trees. Finally, an innovative rule-based procedure is employed using the edge orientation histogram from the imagery to eliminate false positive candidates. The improved building detection algorithm has been tested on different test areas and it is shown that the algorithm offers high building detection rate in complex scenes which are hilly and densely vegetated. [Termes IGN] précision du positionnementRésumé : (Auteur) Existing research on DEM vertical accuracy assessment uses mainly statistical methods, in particular variance and RMSE which are both based on the error propagation theory in statistics. This article demonstrates that error propagation theory is not applicable because the critical assumption behind it cannot be satisfied. In fact, the non-random, non-normal, and non-stationary nature of DEM error makes it very challenging to apply statistical methods. This article presents approximation theory as a new methodology and illustrates its application to DEMs created by linear interpolation using contour lines as the source data. Applying approximation theory, a DEM's accuracy is determined by the largest error of any point (not samples) in the entire study area. The error at a point is bounded by max(|?mode|+M2h2/8) where |?node| is the error in the source data used to interpolate the point, M2 is the maximum norm of the second-order derivative which can be interpreted as curvature, and h is the length of the line on which linear interpolation is conducted. The article explains how to compute each term and illustrates how this new methodology based on approximation theory effectively facilitates DEM accuracy assessment and quality control. Comparisons with results from practical trials are often used; in this research, photogrammetry has proved to be an excellent method of creating a benchmark model from experimental results against which the computer generated numerical model can be compared. The wind tunnel experimental environment is challenging with practical limitations imposed by space and airflow capabilities. There are few documented cases where stereo-photogrammetry has been used in wind tunnel sail modelling and the results from this research have shown it has played a prominent role in validating an innovative method of modelling fluid–structure interaction. This paper presents the photogrammetric work undertaken to validate a fluid–structure interaction (FSI) solution by measuring the shape of a close reaching asymmetric spinnaker in a wind tunnel at The University of Nottingham. There is particular focus on the data capture in the wind tunnel and the photogrammetric analysis.
