[Termes IGN] Triangulated Irregular NetworkRésumé : (Auteur) A new method applying close range laser scan (Lidar) survey in capturing 3D objects was presented in this study. One linear laser source Lidar was used for the survey of the objects. This approach is particularly essential for 3D modelling of urban buildings in a geospatial database. Data calibration and merging were conducted for combing point cluster datasets surveyed from different locations and angles of one object in order to generate a 3D data model for the entire object. The point cluster data were transformed and converted into a triangulated irregular network (TIN) mesh model in a 3D geospatial database. The TIN mesh model was compressed and simplified by applying a computing script of surface variability priority parameters. The digital surface images and textures of the building object were draped onto the 3D TIN model according to their coordinate locations. This research provides a direct and fast means of capturing 3D objects on the Earth's surface in a geospatial database. [Termes IGN] surveillance de l'urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) Unplanned development and informal settlements are typical characteristics of megacities not only in developing countries but also in many developed countries, and they have considerable impact on the environment and on multiple human activities. Thus, development of an automated, robust, cost-effective, and quick procedure for informal building monitoring is of great value. This paper introduces a simple strategy based on a change detection algorithm intended for application in Greece. Several internally published methods for change detection are presented prior to presenting the proposed strategy. The results of two application tests in the greater area of Athens in the Attica region of Greece are presented and compared with the results of the commercial package, Feature Analyst™. The results of the proposed application are discussed and further research is proposed. [Termes IGN] positionnement absoluRésumé : (Auteur) Most geoscientific applications using georeferenced cartographic/geospatial data require good knowledge and visualization of the topography of the Earth's surface. For example, mapping of geomorphological features is hardly feasible from a single image; three-dimensional (3D) information has to be generated or added for a better interpretation of the two-dimensional data. Since the early emergence of earth observation satellites, researchers have investigated different methods of extracting 3D information using satellite data. Since the early experiments with the Earth Terrain Camera flown onboard SkyLab in 1973 to 1974, various analogue or digital sensors in the visible or microwave spectrum have been flown to provide researchers and geoscientists with spatial data for extracting and interpreting 3D information of the Earth's surface. Stereo viewing using digital scanner images, such as with the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) along-track sensors, was, and still is, the most common method used by the mapping, geomatic, and geoscientific communities for generating digital elevation models (DEMs). This paper will review the basic characteristics of stereoscopy and its application to the ASTER system for DEM generation. It will thus address the methods, algorithms and commercial software to extract absolute or relative elevation and assess their performance using the results from various research and commercial organizations. It will finally discuss the use of stereo ASTER DEMs for different geomatic and geoscientific applications.
