[Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Thin plate spline interpolation is a widely used approach to generate a digital elevation model (DEM) from contour lines and scattered data. In practice, contour maps are scanned and vectorized, and after resampling in the target grid resolution, interpolation is performed. In this paper we demonstrate the limited accuracy of this process, and propose a high-resolution processing method (without vectorization) that ensures maximum utilization of information in the source data. First, we discuss the mathematical background of thin plate spline interpolation, and explain the multigrid relaxation principle used to speed up convergence. After, we will show why fine tuning is necessary, especially when contour lines and elevation points are processed at the same time. Finally, our own contour thinning method that produces a significant reduction of elevation bias is described. Many algorithms have been implemented to sort out the automatic classification problem as well as the Digital Terrain Model generation (DTM). This is mainly due to the various aspects of landscapes within a global survey which can include urban, forested or mountainous areas. This paper is focused on the generation of DTM over rural areas that are composed of open fields and forests. The methodology we propose is based on the joint use of optical images and Lidar data. It aims at adapting the window size of a morphological-based filtering algorithm to the presence of vegetated areas. In this context, Lidar intensity and optical images are combined to generate a Hybrid Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (HNDVI). A vegetation mask is then calculated with HNDVI and Lidar variance information. The window size continuously varies from a predefined minimum distance to an automatically processed upper boundary. We show with conclusive results the potentiality of a full combination of Lidar data and RGB optical images for improving the generation of fine DTMs on rural environments. [Termes IGN] visibilitéRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes an automated method for predicting the number of satellites visible to a GPS receiver, at any point on the Earth's surface at any time. Intervisibility analysis between a GPS receiver and each potentially visible GPS satellite is performed using a number of different surface models and satellite orbit calculations. The developed software can work with various ephemeris data, and will compute satellite visibility in real time. Real-time satellite availability prediction is very useful for mobile applications such as in-car navigation systems, personal navigations systems and LBS. The implementation of the method is described and the results are reported. [Termes IGN] topographie localeRésumé : (Auteur) Research has shown the importance of measuring topography for surface change detection and that the use of remote sensing methods is ideal for this application. A prerequisite for measuring change is a historical data-set that covers the time period of interest. Many remote methods of topographic data collection such as lidar are relatively recent developments and therefore cannot provide records longer than about a decade. Alternatively, aerial photography has been in common use since the early 20th century and archives upwards of 50years are therefore not uncommon. While photogrammetry is dependent on well distributed, high quality ground control points (GCPs), such data has been successfully applied retroactively. Therefore, contemporary lidar data, which requires little ground-truth data, should be an ideal source of GCPs for controlling historical aerial photographs. This study aims to evaluate the success with which GCPs can be extracted from a high-resolution lidar data-set for controlling aerial photography for digital elevation model (DEM) production. Using a data-set collected in Upper Wharfedale, northern England, GCPs were measured both by means of a lidar data-set and by using traditional field-based methods. The results showed that while the use of lidar-derived ground control produced a DEM of inferior quality, increasing the number of GCPs used in the model produced results comparable to the GPS-controlIed DEM. These results are significant especially for surface change detection research in remote areas where high quality ground control is difficult to secure.
