My main professional activities, since my PhD defence in 2010, in the MATIS team of the French National Institute of Geographic and Forest Information (IGN), are described here. It may also include recall to previous works of the 2007-2010 period. I was recruited in the research department of IGN in 2005, being a civil servant. I first started as engineer on 3D airborne lidar point cloud processing in urban, natural, and seashore environments during the 2005-2007 period. Then, I focused on the emerging fullwaveform lidar technology during my PhD thesis, with a slight emphasis on urban areas (2007-2010). Since 2010, I took the lead of the research group that deals with land-cover mapping and change detection as well as 2D/3D geodatabase evaluation. Now, it encompasses more generally semantization and reconstruction issues for scene understanding. I naturally moved from airborne lidar data to any kind of geospatial/overhead remote sensing data (mainly satellite and airborne vertical imagery). Some of the developed methods has been eventually specialized to 3D terrestrial point clouds. [...] Note de contenu : PART ONE - SCIENTIFIC SYNTHESIS

The multi-represented datasets contain different representations for identical real-world entities. Therefore, update propagation is useful and required for maintaining multi-represented datasets. The key to update propagation is the detection of identical features in different datasets that represent corresponding real-world entities and the detection of changes in updated datasets. Using polygon features of settlements as examples, this article addresses these key problems and proposes an approach for multi-represented feature matching based on spatial similarity and a back-propagation neural network (BPNN). Although this approach only utilizes the measures of distance, area, direction and length, it dynamically and objectively determines the weight of each measure through intelligent learning; in contrast, traditional approaches determine weight using expertise. Therefore, the weight may be variable in different data contexts but not for different levels of expertise. This approach can be applied not only to one-to-one matching but also to one-to-many and many-to-many matching. Experiments are designed using two different approaches and four datasets that encompass an area in China. The goals are to demonstrate the weight differences in different data contexts and to measure the performance of the BPNN-based feature matching approach. [Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Crowdsourcing is a popular means of acquiring data, but the use of such data is limited by concerns with its quality. This is evident within cartography and geographical sciences more generally, with the quality of volunteered geographic information (VGI) recognized as a major challenge to address if the full potential of citizen sensing in mapping applications is to be realized. Here, a means to characterize the quality of volunteers, based only on the data they contribute, was used to explore issues connected with the quantity and quality of volunteers for attribute mapping. The focus was on data in the form of annotations or class labels provided by volunteers who visually interpreted an attribute, land cover, from a series of satellite sensor images. A latent class model was found to be able to provide accurate characterisations of the quality of volunteers in terms of the accuracy of their labelling, irrespective of the number of cases that they labelled. The accuracy with which a volunteer could be characterized tended to increase with the number of volunteers contributing but was typically good at all but small numbers of volunteers. Moreover, the ability to characterize volunteers in terms of the quality of their labelling could be used constructively. For example, volunteers could be ranked in terms of quality which could then be used to select a sub-set as input to a subsequent mapping task. This was particularly important as an identified subset of volunteers could undertake a task more accurately than when part of a larger group of volunteers. The results highlight that both the quantity and quality of volunteers need consideration and that the use of VGI may be enhanced through information on the quality of the volunteers derived entirely from the data provided without any additional information.
