[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Problems of precision and accuracy in geographical information systems have often been undervalued. However, these are important issues when trying to avoid inaccurate computations that could distort the final result. A method is described for the Transverse Mercator Projection of the ellipsoid to calculate the necessary number of terms of their series development so that desired accuracy can be achieved. The first part describes one algorithm used to obtain the full development of the formulas by means of a symbolic calculus program. The second part studies the influence of each term in the final result in order to know which terms can be neglected while achieving the desired precision. Finally, the results are applied to a rectangle of 30° width and latitude varying from 30° to 50°. [Termes IGN] précision de la classificationRésumé : (Auteur) Variability in per cell classification accuracy is predominantly modelled with landcover class as the explanatory variable, i.e. with users' accuracies from the error matrix. Logistic regression models were developed to include other explanatory variables: heterogeneity in the 3 x 3 window around a cell, the size of the patch and the complexity of the landscape in which a cell is located. It was found that per cell, the probability of correct classification was significantly (a = 0.05) higher for cells with a less heterogeneous neighbourhood, for cells part of larger patches and for cells in regions with a less heterogeneous landscape. To validate the models, a leave-one-out procedure was applied in which the absolute difference between the actual and the model-estimated number of cells correctly classified was summarized over 55 regions in the Netherlands. The sum of differences reduced from 60.9 to 48.1 after adding the variables 'patch size' and 'landscape dominance' to the land-cover class model. Spatial variability thus modelled therefore led to a substantial improvement in the estimation of the per cell classification accuracy. [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This article is an overview of the issues considered for a map digitization project. It is based on the authors' experience of building a website for early printed maps of Hampshire, which is still growing in scope and ideas. Most map websites, even those that are funded well, seem to have very limited objectives, and some surprising lack of rigour. We advocate an adventurous approach, constrained by clear and defined standards of working. We have considered why and how maps, and associated descriptive texts, can be presented, and how raw text and image data can be made available for further research. [Termes IGN] transformation intensité-teinte-saturationRésumé : (Auteur) Hillshading provides a rendering of topographic surfaces by assigning brightness to surface elements based on the orientation of these elements and a selected direction of illumination. Users easily visualize many topographic features, but some areas lack detail, as one shade of gray does not define a unique surface orientation. We clarify some of this ambiguity by varying the color of layer tints with aspect direction. We use the CIELAB [commission internationale de l'éclairage] color model to quantify color specifications and map variations in luminosity onto slices of the Hue-Saturation-Value (HSV) color model. Traditionally, cartographers assign an aspect-invariant color (or colors) based on H and S and vary V with the hillshading values. In our research, we assign aspect-variant H and V values in close proximity in HSV color space. We use values of luminosity and saturation from the CIELAB and HSV color models to select colors that are least saturated, most saturated, least luminous, and most luminous to represent the northwest, southeast, southwest, and northeast directions, respectively. We then vary V in the traditional manner with hillshading from the northwest. Topographic details not apparent in the original hillshaded mas are highlighted with this technique.
