[Termes IGN] traitement de donnéesRésumé : (auteur) Acknowledging a paucity of emerging research, and some variation by sub-field, the geographical measures of exposure used in health and medical geography have largely stagnated often focusing on residence-based (‘static’) conceptualisations to define an individuals mobility or exposure. Detailed spatiotemporal data, such as smartphone data, allow richer understandings of the influence of the environment, or more broadly of place, on individual health outcomes and behaviours. However, while researchers are increasingly aware of such ‘dynamic’ definitions of place these are seldom employed in empirical evidence. Moreover, there may be differences in mobility by population groups which has not to our knowledge been examined fully. The main aim of this article is to provide a critical review of progress in the conceptualisation of location in health-related geospatial research to understand the evolution of key concepts and to provoke the reader into considering the utility of a (more) dynamic health geography. We explore the origins of time geography, activity spaces, before moving to recent developments in the area of the exposome and the linked dynamic conceptualisations of exposure in health geography. To illuminate and operationalise findings from our review for readers, we provide a small case study to demonstrate how ‘static’ and ‘dynamic’ approaches differ. Moreover, we consider why understanding heterogeneity in mobility could be particularly salient in the field of health geography, and to the discipline of geography more broadly. To conclude, we help readers understand the practical considerations of data privacy, the process of data collection, data processing, and interpretation, and dissemination of findings to offer practical assistance for those who are grappling with ‘dynamic’ definitions of mobility and conceptualisations of exposure. [Termes IGN] Québec (Canada)Résumé : (auteur) This study uses uncertainty propagation in real flood events to derive a probabilistic flood map. The flood event of spring 2017 in Quebec was selected for this analysis, with the computational domain being a reach of the Mille Iles River. The main parameter deemed uncertain in this work is the upstream water discharge; a given value of this discharge is utilized to build a random sample of 500 scenarios using the Latin hypercube sampling method. Simulations were run using CuteFlow-Cuda, an in-house finite volume-based shallow water equations solver, to derive the statistical mean and the standard deviation of the free surface elevation and the water depth at each node. For this real flood case, the initial interface flux scheme had to be adapted, combining a developed version of the scheme introduced by Harten, Lax and van Leer at wet interfaces and the Lax–Friedrichs scheme with additional free surface corrections for wet and dry transitions. Comparisons with results obtained from TELEMAC and from in situ observations show generally close predictions, and overall good agreement with observations. Errors of the free surface prediction relative to observations are less than 2.75%. A map based on the standard deviation of the water depth is presented to enhance the areas most prone to flooding. Finally, a flood map is produced, showing the flooded inhabited areas near the municipalities of Saint-Eustache and Deux Montagnes around the reach of the Mille Iles River as it overflows its natural bed. [Termes IGN] répartition géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Data classification, i.e. organising data items in groups (classes), is a general technique widely used in data visualisation and cartography, in particular, for creation of choropleth maps. Conventionally, data are classified by dividing the data range into intervals and assigning the same symbol or colour to all data falling within an interval. For instance, the intervals may be of the same length or may include the same number of data items. We propose a method for defining intervals so that some quantity represented by values of another attribute is equally distributed among the classes. This kind of classification supports exploratory analysis of relationships between the attribute used for the classification and the distribution of the phenomenon whose quantity is represented by the additional attribute. The approach may be especially useful when the distribution of the phenomenon is very unequal, with many data items having zero or low quantities and quite a few items having larger quantities. With such a distribution, standard statistical analysis of the relationships may be problematic. We demonstrate the potential of the approach by analysing data referring to a set of spatially distributed people (patients) in relationship to characteristics of the areas in which the people live. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) Rainwater harvesting (RWH), which is the collection and storage of rainwater for multiple purposes, is gaining recognition in water supply issues. Selection of harvesting sites is the most critical factor in RWH projects. The objective of this study is to develop a suitability map of RWH sites for a basin in Saudi Arabia. The method used, constitute the identification and assigning weights to criteria, and generation of suitability map using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). Eight appropriate criteria were considered. Results showed that excellent and good sites covered about 40.6% of the total available sites. Sensitivity analysis showed that the curve number (CN), slope, rainfall and soil were the most influential criteria. The maximum increase in the percentage area of excellent sites was 92% while good and moderate classes decreased by 43 and 53%, respectively. The developed suitability maps provide useful information to the decision maker for use in water management.
