[Termes IGN] toile d'araignée mondialeRésumé : (Auteur) Emerging webbased mapping technologies use the World Wide Web (WWW) and Internet protocols to provide the ability to distribute, access, and visualize geospatial information over the Internet. Many webbased mapping applications have been developed to deliver geospatial information within and across organizations and even to the public at large. A major technological challenge is to achieve interoperability amongst webbased mapping applications so that mapping and geoprocessing resources distributed over the Internet can be shared and integrated. This paper presents an approach to the development of webbased mapping applications using distributed object technology in order to enable interoperability. Distributed object technology combines object technology, which utilizes reusable software components (called objects) that model realworld entities to build software systems, and distributed computing, which allows computing resources to be distributed and accessed over computer networks. The paper introduces a distributed object technology, the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA); proposes an architecture for webbased mapping using CORBA ; and presents a prototype implementation. [Termes IGN] utilisateur civilRésumé : (auteur) With the increasing number of geographic Web sites, users, novices or experts, have new requirements with regard to their usage of geographic information on the internet network. They cannot always express these requirements. This article seeks to solve this problem. This consists in adding more interactivity to geographic Web sites by introducing new means of communications between Net surfers and their machine: natural language and map samples. We propose an help to users to specify their needs for geographical information on the Web. At first, a review of the current means of access to the geographic information is realized as well as an analysis of encountered problems. Our contribution is then defined: to combine natural language and samples. We present the general architecture of our system focus on the use of samples in the human-computer dialogue in natural language. [Termes IGN] système expertRésumé : (auteur) A crucial requirement for the effective exploitation of geographic information is users' access to the knowledge held in corresponding stored resources, i.e. their understanding of what can be derived from available geographic databases and software. At the core of it is the problem of how to share and reuse knowledge, a major current challenge of Artificial Intelligence (Al). The work presented here extends upon lessons learnt in Al. The proposed solution to the users’ access issue is an expert system that stores geographical knowledge derivation recipes, and that allows users to browse and customise these recipes. Specifically, we build a model representing the recipes components, i.e. geographic application patterns. This model structures metadata about geographic data and metadata about stored processes, and it describes the usage of these data and processes. A prototype of this system, coded in Java, is presented in this paper. [Termes IGN] VRMLRésumé : (Auteur) This paper explores the way in which GIS, Virtual Reality (VR) and the Internet are closely integrated through the link of Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML) for spatial data visualisation, analysis and exploration. Integration takes advantage of each component, and enables the dynamic 3D content to be built, visualised, interacted with and deployed all on the Web. To accomplish this, a hybrid approach that merges the conventional client-side and server-side methods is proposed, which offers the best of both worlds in terms of flexibility and capability, as well as the rational use of computing resources. Based on this approach, a Web-based prototype toolkit is designed and implemented by using an affordable desktop GIS through its macro language together with Java, Common Gateway Interface (CGI) and HTML programming. This toolkit comprises a 3D visualisation tool, a 3D analysis tool, and a Java/VRML interface, which are respectively used for the creation of VRML models from 2D maps, surface analysis (e.g. profile creation and visibility analysis), and interaction (e.g. selecting and querying) with the output VRML worlds of 3D visualisation and analysis. It is demonstrated that this toolkit provides an integrated environment, facilitating users to gain insights from the interaction with virtual environments that are built from existing GIS databases.
