[Termes IGN] traitement interactifRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate provenance information facilitates improved understanding of Earth science data and scientific reproducibility and can serve as an indicator of data quality. Provenance capture is an integral part of many modern workflow systems but may not have been considered in the design of legacy data production systems. Furthermore, in addition to data lineage, it is also important to capture contextual information needed for understanding how a data set was produced. This paper describes our experience in retrofitting a legacy data system to support capture, storage, and dissemination of provenance. Data inputs and transformations are logged automatically, while broader context information describing science algorithms and ancillary files is manually compiled. Provenance and context information are integrated for interactive user access and embedded into data files as XML documents compliant with the “Lineage” specification for geographic metadata defined by the International Organization for Standardization in the ISO 19115-2 standard. Lessons learned from this approach can inform others who need to incorporate provenance into a data system after the fact. [Termes IGN] source de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) This paper maps the data lineage entities in ISO19115 and ISO19115-2, the metadata standards of the International Organization for Standardization for geographic information and for imagery and gridded data [ISO geospatial metadata (GMD)], to the entities in open provenance model (OPM). The term “map” refers to establishing a correspondence between the said entities in ISO GMD and OPM. Presently, many geospatial data available in spatial data infrastructures (SDI) are described using ISO GMD. Its structure, however, makes tracing the provenance of these data a challenging task. OPM prioritizes causal relationships between things for capturing the workflow applied to particular data, making it easier to trace the data provenance. The mapping in this paper provides a convenient means to trace the provenance of data through the OPM causal relations and evaluate the fitness for use of these data, a necessary step toward data integration. This paper uses the notion of process to identify various data processing activities encoded in ISO GMD, the resource and the agent types involved in these activities, and state changes. A software prototype to carry out the mapping is developed. The mapping result is encoded in the resource description framework format to permit integral use of geospatial data in SDI and the data from the open data world. An exemplar metadata in ISO GMD from the National Oceanographic Data Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is used to demonstrate the feasibility to convert from the ISO GMD data lineage entities to the OPM entities. [Termes IGN] patrimoine culturelRésumé : (Auteur) In addition to its legal implications, INSPIRE represents the most important movement towards a true implementation of interoperable spatial data services. Cultural Heritage is a thematic field that is not considered separately within INSPIRE, although some portions of it do fall within the category of Protected Sites, listed in Annex I, and also in the theme Buildings in Annex III. Developing an extended schema for Cultural Heritage data within the INSPIRE framework is an essential step towards allowing heritage information to become yet another part of the wider field of spatial information. Our aim is to achieve this by taking advantage of the benefits of the “INSPIRE movement”. This paper presents some insights into the development of such an application schema, focusing on some general, conceptual considerations upon which that specific data model has been built.
