[Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) In this work we address the task of the contextual classification of an airborne LiDAR point cloud. For that purpose, we integrate a Random Forest classifier into a Conditional Random Field (CRF) framework. It is a flexible approach for obtaining a reliable classification result even in complex urban scenes. In this way, we benefit from the consideration of context on the one hand and from the opportunity to use a large amount of features on the other hand. Considering the interactions in our experiments increases the overall accuracy by 2%, though a larger improvement becomes apparent in the completeness and correctness of some of the seven classes discerned in our experiments. We compare the Random Forest approach to linear models for the computation of unary and pairwise potentials of the CRF, and investigate the relevance of different features for the LiDAR points as well as for the interaction of neighbouring points. In a second step, building objects are detected based on the classified point cloud. For that purpose, the CRF probabilities for the classes are plugged into a Markov Random Field as unary potentials, in which the pairwise potentials are based on a Potts model. The 2D binary building object masks are extracted and evaluated by the benchmark ISPRS Test Project on Urban Classification and 3D Building Reconstruction. The evaluation shows that the main buildings (larger than 50 m2) can be detected very reliably with a correctness larger than 96% and a completeness of 100%. [Termes IGN] Ventoux, MontRésumé : (auteur) Timely and accurate measurements of forest parameters are critical for ecosystem studies, sustainable forest resources management, monitoring and planning. This paper presents a processing chain for individual tree segmentation over large areas with airborne LiDAR 3D point cloud and very high resolution (VHR) optical imagery. The proposed processing chain consists of forest stand level delineation with optical imagery, individual tree segmentation with Canopy Height Model (CHM) derived from LiDAR point cloud, rough characterization of trees at forest stand level, and point clustering of individual tree with an Adaptive Mean Shift 3D (AMS3D) algorithm. The processing chain is developed with the expectation of supporting operational forest inventory at individual tree level. Experiment is conducted using LiDAR data acquired in Ventoux region, France. Results suggest that the proposed processing chain can be successfully adopted for individual tree characterization over large areas with different forest stands. [Termes IGN] United States Geological SurveyRésumé : (Auteur) With the acquisition of lidar data for over 30 percent of the US, it is now possible to assess the three-dimensional distribution of features at the national scale. This paper integrates over 350 billion lidar points from 28 disparate datasets into a national-scale database and evaluates if height above ground is an important variable in the context of other national-scale layers, such as the US Geological Survey National Land Cover Database and the US Environmental Protection Agency ecoregions maps. While the results were not homoscedastic and the available data did not allow for a complete height census in any of the classes, it does appear that where lidar data were used, there were detectable differences in heights among many of these national classification schemes. This study supports the hypothesis that there were real, detectable differences in heights in certain national-scale classification schemes, despite height not being a variable used in any of the classification routines. While former methods focus on delineating patches of roads without computing a coherent road network, we formulate a very large number of road hypothesis that are pruned using a graph reasoning and weak a priori knowledge on road behavior. The initial solution is computed by means of two machine learning and pattern recognition state-of-the-art methods (namely, Random Forest classification and Marked Point Process) that allow to process very large areas in little time with very satisfactory results. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) Statistical measures of patterns (textures) in surface roughness are used to quantitatively differentiate volcanic deposit facies on the Pumice Plain, on the northern flank of Mount St. Helens (MSH). Surface roughness values are derived from a Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) point cloud collected in 2004 from a fixed-wing airborne platform. Patterns in surface roughness are characterized using co-occurrence texture statistics. Pristine-pyroclastic, reworked-pyroclastic, mudflow, boulder beds, eroded lava flows, braided streams, and other units within the Pumice Plain are all found to have significantly distinct roughness textures. The MSH deposits are reasonably accessible, and the textural variations have been verified in the field. Results of this work indicate that by affecting the distribution of large clasts and tens-of-meter scale landforms, modification of pyroclastic deposits by lahars alters the morphology of the surface in detectable quantifiable ways. When a lahar erodes a pyroclastic deposit, surface roughness increases, as does the randomness in the deposit surface. Conversely, when a lahar deposits material, the resulting landforms are less rough but more random than pristine pumice-rich pyroclastic deposits. By mapping these relationships and others, volcanic deposit facies can be differentiated. This new method of mapping, based on roughness texture, has the potential to aid mapping efforts in more remote regions, both on this planet and elsewhere in the solar system.
